Book The Passion for Music A Sociology of Mediation

Download or read book The Passion for Music A Sociology of Mediation written by Dr Antoine Hennion and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is an accumulation of mediators: instruments, languages, sheets, performers, scenes, media and so on. Learning from music - this art of infinite mediations - allows us to confront sociology with a different way of considering objects. For this task, Hennion draws on aesthetics, art history, science, technology and popular music studies. He shows us that music is a collective process, which must always be performed again and again. As part of that project, he presents a wide-ranging series of case studies, restoring attention to the rich and varied intermediaries through which music is brought to life. This is the first English translation of one of the most important works of French scholarship on music and society.

Book Music Passion and Cognitive Function

Download or read book Music Passion and Cognitive Function written by Leonid Perlovsky and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-02-25 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music, Passion, and Cognitive Function examines contemporary cognitive theories of music, why they cannot explain music’s power over us, and the origin and evolution of music. The book presents experimental confirmations of the theory in psychological and neuroimaging research, discussing the parallel evolution of consciousness, musical styles, and cultures since Homer and King David. In addition, it explains that 'in much wisdom is much grief' due to cognitive dissonances created by language that splits the inner world. Music enables us to survive in this sea of grief, overcomes discomforts and stresses of acquiring new knowledge, and unifies the soul, hence the power of music. Provides a foundation of music theory Demonstrates how emotions motivate interaction between cognition and language Covers differentiation and synthesis in consciousness Compares the parallel evolution of music and cultures Examines the idea of music overcoming cognitive dissonances

Book How Music Developed A Critical and Explanatory Account of the Growth of Modern Music

Download or read book How Music Developed A Critical and Explanatory Account of the Growth of Modern Music written by William James Henderson and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN reading any history of the development of music as an art one must ever bear in mind the fact that music was also developing at the same time as a popular mode of expression, and that the two processes were separate. The cultivation of modern music as an art was begun by the medieval priests of the Roman Catholic Church, who were endeavoring to arrange a liturgy for their service, and it is due to this fact that for several centuries the only artistic music was that of the Church, and that it was controlled by influences which barely touched the popular songs of the times. In the course of years the two kinds of music came together, and important changes were made. But any account of the development of modern music as an art is compelled to begin with the story of the medieval chant. In the beginning the chants of the Christian Church, from which the medieval chant was developed, were without system. They were a heterogeneous mass of music derived wholly from sources which chanced to be near at hand. The early Christians in Judea must naturally have borrowed their music from the worship of their forefathers, who were mostly Jews. The Christians in Greece naturally adapted Greek music to their requirements, while those in Rome made use of the Roman kithara (lyre) songs, which in their turn were borrowed from the Greeks. Christ and the apostles at the Last Supper chanted one of the old Hebrew psalms. Saint Paul speaks also of "hymns and spiritual songs," by one of which designations he certainly means the hymns of the early Christians founded on Roman lyre songs. It is also on record that the Christian communities of Alexandria as early as 180 A. D. were in the habit of repeating the chant of the Last Supper with an accompaniment of flutes, and Pliny, the Younger (62-110 A. D.), describes the custom of singing hymns to the glory of Christ.
