Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church, the Renaissance and Protestantism My Dear Friend, You are about to publish the lectures which you gave last winter in the hall of the rue d Assas on "The Catholic Church, the Renaissance, and the Reformation." They are a summary, in three series of lectures, containing the essence of what you have already taught the students of the Catholic Institute, but they go deeper into your subject, and open up new fields of inquiry by the use of more abundant materials. You will bear me out when I say that you did not easily obtain my promise to write a few lines destined to appear at the beginning of your book. Modesty is no doubt very praiseworthy, but I think you have allowed it to carry you too far. It seemed to me unnecessary to introduce to the public, as if he were a stranger, a historian to whom the French Academy has twice decreed the highest of its rewards, the grand price Goben, and a professor who, in the performance of his duties, has brought so much honour to the Catholic Institute of Paris. At the Baltimore Catholic Congress, Henry F. Brownson, LL.D., said: The American system is also anti-protestant, and must either reject Protestantism, or be overthrown by it. At the dedication of the Roman Catholic Uni versity at Washington, Father Fidelis asserted: Either the Catholic Church is God's agency set in operation and maintained by Him for the salva tion of mankind, or else there is no hope from God. Protestantism has had its day, and is pass ing, as all human systems of philosophy or religion must surely pass. Book A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Catholic Church in the United States IT is seldom, indeed, that the American Catholic author of a strictly Catholic book, has the gratification of adding a few words to the fourth edition of his fist book within a few months after its first issue. Yet, scarcely six months have passed since the first copy of the present volume was given to the public. The earliest edition was so quickly disposed of, that I had but little time to make a hasty re vision, when another was called for. Soon a third edition was demanded, and, now, a fourth. I feel that I am deeply indebted to the kindness and generous appreciation of our Catholic public. To express fully my warm gratitude, I am at a loss for fitting terms. Were my volume a novel, or a romance, I would not be so astonished at its success; but it is a book of dates, facts, and figures, a book in which imagination had little room for play, a book, in fine, standing on the solid ground of truth. But, after all, perhaps, truth is stranger than fiction. Nor are my thanks less due to the American, Canadian, and British press, for the friendly expressions of welcome, the manly, courteous reception accorded to my first literary venture in the book-world. But I thank, above all, those learned and venerable Rulers of the Church whose valued, weighty, and beauti ful words of encouragement, I'can never forget. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Protestantism and Catholicism in Their Bearing Upon the Liberty and Properity of Nations: A Study of Social Economy I thank you for your prompt assent to my request that your Tract on the relations of Reformed and unreformed Christianity respectively, in the West of Europe, to the liberty and prosperity of nations, might be translated into English. I need hardly say to any, least Of all to you, that this request did not imply adoption of your precise point of view, or of each of your Opinions in detail. You have not, I believe, been governed by theo logical partialities in the judgment at which you have arrived; nor have I, in the desire to give currency in this country to a Tract which includes your rather unfavourable estimate of its Church in comparison with the other Reformed Communions. But I have felt that desire very strongly, because. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At the same time he undertook the preparation of the present work, in order to counteract the pernicious influence exerted among his countrymen by Guizot's lectures on Euro pean civilization, and to neutralize the facilities offered under the regime of Espartero for the success of a Protestant Propagandism in Spain. Book The Case for Catholicism

Download or read book The Case for Catholicism written by Trent Horn and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and thorough defense of the Catholic Church against Protestant objections in print. This book is especially relevant as the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation draws near and discussion of the arguments made against the Church during that time in history receive renewed interest. The Case for Catholicism answers arguments put forward by early Reformers like Luther and Calvin as well as contemporary defenders of Protestantism like Norm Geisler and R.C. Sproul. It provides a meticulous defense of the biblical and historical nature of Catholic doctrines from Scripture and church history. Finally, in both answering Protestant objections to Catholicism and in providing evidence for the Faith,The Case for Catholicism cites modern Protestant scholars who question Reformation assumptions and show how evidence from Scripture and church history support aspects of Catholic theology. This book is divided into four sections, with each answering a key question Christians have asked about the nature of their faith. Those key questions are: What is my authority? What is the Church? How am I saved?Who belongs to the body of Christ? The Case for Catholicism will become a reliable, resource for any Catholic who desires a well-researched, readable, and persuasive answer to Protestant arguments made against the Catholic faith.

Book History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century written by Jean Henri Merle d'Aubigné and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation in the Sixteenth Century The author had no idea, however, of writing a book of devotion; his intention was to write a History. He wished to represent faithfully the men and the events of the Sixteenth Century. With this object he studied the writings of the Reformers, and the chronicles of their contemporaries. He made researches in the public and in the private libraries in different countries. He deciphered many manuscripts of the Sixteenth Century, several of which were unknown till he made use of them. But he felt that, in order to accomplish his object, it was not enough simply to give a chronicle of facts. That which constituted the great wonder of the Reformation, was the setting forth of God's truth in the midst of human error - the breath of heaven, that blew upon the Church, and quickened into life so many of the Lord's servants. To shut oneself into a study and pore over manuscripts, was not enough to enable him to write this History; it was necessary to know the true springs of the work, of which the Reformers were the instruments. Book Catholic and Protestant Translations of the Imitatio Christi 1425 1650

Download or read book Catholic and Protestant Translations of the Imitatio Christi 1425 1650 written by Maximilian von Habsburg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Imitatio Christi is considered one of the classic texts of Western spirituality. There were 800 manuscript copies and more than 740 different printed editions of the Imitatio between its composition in the fifteenth century and 1650. During the Reformation period, the book retained its popularity with both Protestants and Catholics; with the exception of the Bible it was the most frequently printed book of the sixteenth century. In this pioneering study, the remarkable longevity of the Imitatio across geographical, chronological, linguistic and confessional boundaries is explored. Rather than attributing this enduring popularity to any particular quality of universality, this study suggests that its key virtue was its appropriation by different interest groups. That such an apparently Catholic and monastic work could be adopted and adapted by both Protestant reformers and Catholic activists (including the Jesuits) poses intriguing questions about our understanding of Reformation and Counter Reformation theology and confessional politics. This study focuses on the editions of the Imitatio printed in English, French, German and Latin between the 1470s and 1650. It offers an ambitious and comprehensive survey of the process of translation and its impact and contribution to religious culture. In so doing it offers a fresh analysis of spirituality and devotion within their proper late medieval and early modern contexts. It also demonstrates that spirituality was not a peripheral dimension of religion, but remains at the very heart of both Catholic and Protestant self-perception and identity.
