Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume to focus on the trope of racial passing in novels, memoirs, television, and films published or produced between 1990 and 2010, Passing Interest takes the scholarly conversation on passing into the twenty-first century. With contributors working in the fields of African American studies, American studies, cultural studies, film studies, literature, and media studies, this book offers a rich, interdisciplinary survey of critical approaches to a broad range of contemporary passing texts. Contributors frame recent passing texts with a wide array of cultural discourses, including immigration law, the Post-Soul Aesthetic, contemporary political satire, affirmative action, the paradoxes of "colorblindness," and the rhetoric of "post-racialism." Many explore whether "one drop" of blood still governs our sense of racial identity, or to what extent contemporary American culture allows for the racially indeterminate individual. Some essays open the scholarly conversation to focus on "ethnic" passers—individuals who complicate the traditional black-white binary—while others explore the slippage between traditional racial passing and related forms of racial performance, including blackface minstrelsy and racial masquerade.

Book Neo Passing

  • Author : Mollie Godfrey

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans once passed as whites to escape the pains of racism. Today's neo-passing has pushed the old idea of passing in extraordinary new directions. A white author uses an Asian pen name; heterosexuals live "out" as gay; and, irony of ironies, whites try to pass as black. Mollie Godfrey and Vershawn Ashanti Young present essays that explore practices, performances, and texts of neo-passing in our supposedly postracial moment. The authors move from the postracial imagery of Angry Black White Boy and the issues of sexual orientation and race in ZZ Packer's short fiction to the politics of Dave Chappelle's skits as a black President George W. Bush. Together, the works reveal that the questions raised by neo-passing—questions about performing and contesting identity in relation to social norms—remain as relevant today as in the past. Contributors: Derek Adams, Christopher M. Brown, Martha J. Cutter, Marcia Alesan Dawkins, Michele Elam, Alisha Gaines, Jennifer Glaser, Allyson Hobbs, Brandon J. Manning, Loran Marsan, Lara Narcisi, Eden Osucha, Gayle Wald, and Deborah Elizabeth Whaley

Book Just Passing Through

Download or read book Just Passing Through written by H. Peter Zell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this updated and revised edition of Just Passing Through: A German American Family Saga, first published in 2011, the author tells the story of several generations of his unique but dysfunctional family spanning over a hundred years including the two world wars. Peter Zell was eight years old when World War II ended and in a prologue entitled A German - American Childhood recounts his boyhood experiences that included the apocalyptic firebombing of his hometown of Stuttgart by the western Allies, the postwar occupation of Germany, and his family’s emigration to America. The book centers on the author’s mother, whom her children called Mutti, and her ordeal during the Nazi era for having been married to a Jew, the son of prosperous Frankfurt business owners, with whom she had two children. With anti-Semitism on the rise in Germany, her husband decided to emigrate to America but Mutti chose to remain behind to take care of her ailing father. The couple had an amicable divorce and while her ex-husband took their son with him, their daughter remained with Mutti in Germany. Under the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, mother and daughter now found themselves classified as non-Aryans which meant that Mutti could not remarry while their teenage daughter, being half Jewish, was put in dire jeopardy of her life. At this point Mutti’s older brother, himself a dedicated National Socialist, proposed an unconventional solution that ensured her survival. Following his advice, she had more children, fathered by so-called Aryans, who were eventually all brought to America. The book follows the lives of the five siblings, all half-brothers and half-sisters, and their difficult relationships with each other as each seeks to achieve his or her version of the American Dream.

Book The Director and The Manager

Download or read book The Director and The Manager written by David S. Fushtey and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 1047 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machiavelli Had it Easy is an engaging text for the emerging discipline of governance. Gaps arise when directors and managers come together from diverse vocational and cultural languages and interests. Compressed information streams in the digital age, yet few reconcile silos of business, legal expertise and regulatory public-interests for informed decisions. This text presents research and a market-tested decision-framework for comparative law, market practice, and human nature in the vital strategic-oversight role of governance. Informed by cognitive science, business practice and legal duties, one conclusion is that bias and self-interests are instinctive but reconciling best-interests is not. Too often lessons learned from centuries of law are overlooked. The chapters are a dozen inquiries into recurring problems in the boardroom. Part one is an entry-level technical reference of law and governance principles. Unique appendices of keywords and case notes will aid those new to markets governed by the western rule-of-law and those tripping on gaps in comparative jargon. Part two is a series of practical hot-topics in the context of law and governance; part three looks to next steps in accountability and liability. The text will help accountants, engineers, lawyers, and business operations and market-policy experts from around the world work together, and; professors, professionals and students anticipate change. After drilling through accountability and liability for hybrid organizations, typical crises are revealed to be from a lack of aligning interests and related information churn. Conclusions of the how and why of governance systems link the human condition and the rule-of-law in the digital age.

Book excerpt: Ezekiel ex-preacher and Vietnam vet struggles to overcome the post- traumatic effects of war. Seeking to find a meaning to his life, he becomes a disciple of a charismatic spiritual master but abandons him to find peace and spiritual enlightenment alone. In doing this, he also abandons his wife and son both of whom love him dearly. Since this love can be a distraction in Ezekiel's quest, he rejects their love ... a love which he must eventually come to terms with. Years pass. Ezekiel's son sets out to find him in order to reunite his parents. He traces Ezekiel to an ocean front residence in Florida. Ezekiel has found some peace here, and the encounter with his son only threatens to tear him away from the quest he so ardently seeks. Finally, Ezekiel must confront the daunting truth about his quest - a quest in which there are valuable lessons to be learned through suffering and self-sacrifice. Aubrey Wharton was born in Guyana, South America, and moved to New York in l968. He attended City and Hunter Colleges and earned degrees in both the arts and science. His degree in English with emphasis on creative writing allowed him to write several plays, most notably "A Different Lifestyle" and "Vietnam Blues," which were produced off-Broadway (l988). When not writing, Aubrey uses his degree in science to work as a Registered Nurse RN. An avid practitioner of yoga, he became a disciple of A.C. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The bluebird was no harbinger of spring at Canyon Pass. Most of the inhabitants had never seen that feathered songster and many had never heard of it. Incidentally these same Passonians would not have known a harbinger in any case, presuming possibly that it was one of those new-fangled nipples for the hydraulic pipes at the Eureka Washings, or something fancy that Bill Judson was selling in cans at the Three Star Grocery. But spring had unmistakably arrived at Canyon Pass when those two irrepressible pocket-hunters, Steve Siebert and Andy McCann, got together their frayed and rusty outfits, exchanged the hard-earned money each had toiled for during the winter over the counter of the Three Star for supplies and loaded each his burro till the sad-eyed little brutes 2almost buckled under the weight of flour, beans, salt pork, coffee, and prospectors' tools..."
