Book Passenger Ships 1910 1919

Download or read book Passenger Ships 1910 1919 written by William H. Miller and published by History Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The decade 1910-1920 was truly dramatic. It was an age of evolutuon, when size and speed were almost the ultimate considerations - it was the Industrial Age reaching fir new heights, new dimensions, breaking records. In response ocean liners were becoming bigger, longer, taller and faster. The larger liners were certainly becoming grander - indeed it was the age of the 'floating palace.' It was also an age of increased corporate rivalries as well as political ones. There seemed to be a continuous swing between Imperial Britain and Imperial Germany in the game of 'who could build the bigger ship?' While the German four-stackers of 1897-1906 and then Cunard's brilliant Mauretania and Lusitania of 1907 led the way to larger and more luxurious liners, White Star Line countered by 1911 with the Olympic, her sister Titanic and a near-sister, the Britannic. The French added the France while Cunard took delivery of the beloved Aquitania. But the Germans won out - they produced the 52,000-ton Imperator and a near-sister, the Vaterland, the last word in shipuilding and engineering prior to the First World War. By the war's end mighty firms such as Hamburg America and North German Lloyd had lost just about everything while Cunard, White Star and others had to rebuild, revive and akmost reinvent themselves for the return to peacetime operations in 1919-20. ...--Back cover.

Book Lake Erie Technical Wreck Diving Guide

Download or read book Lake Erie Technical Wreck Diving Guide written by Erik A Petkovic Sr and published by Dived Up Publications. This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erik Petkovic’s Lake Erie Technical Wreck Diving Guide is packed with tales of maritime disasters: sailing ships and steamers which foundered, succumbed to storms, collided or were engulfed in flames. There are ships which sank more than once, were involved in wars, slave escapes and catastrophic collisions, plus daring stories of deep salvage, valuable cargoes, submarines, experimental engineering and unidentified wrecks. The guide brings to life the rediscovered history of the ships, passengers and crews. Then there are the dives themselves. Some of the wrecks are remarkably intact for their age. Amongst the features which can be seen are wooden ships’ wheels, standing masts, rudders, propellers, portholes, engines, boilers and steamship hogging arches. Each chapter describes the history, current condition, location, dimensions, hazards and highlights of an individual wreck. The author’s original research, contributor photos and archive materials help bring these 19 enticing, challenging, rarely dived wrecks to life. ‘Meticulously researched, nicely composed, beautifully illustrated. I wish I had written this book.’– Gary Gentile 'Any technical diver considering diving on any of these wrecks should first read this one-of-a-kind book!’– Joe Porter, Publisher, Wreck Diving Magazine
