Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From the Diary of Christopher Marshall: Kept in Philadelphia and Lancaster, During the American Revolution, 1774-1781 Christopher Marshall, from whose Diary, called by him a "Remembrancer," the following extracts have been made, was by birthright a member of the Society of Friends, being of one of the oldest families of English origin in the Province of Pennsylvania. His sympathy with the cause of American liberty caused his exclusion from the religious denomination to which he had belonged. This expulsion will explain and perhaps excuse the severity of his views respecting the political conduct of some of his fellow citizens. His associates were among the most prominent Whigs of the country, by whom, it is evident, that he was held in high esteem. I have been unable to ascertain the exact date of his death, but as his will was dated in 1796, and proved on the 3d of May in 1797, I think that his decease probably occurred in the early part of the latter year. Book London in a Box

Download or read book London in a Box written by Odai Johnson and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2017 Theatre Library Association Freedley Award Finalist In this remarkable feat of historical research, Odai Johnson pieces together the surviving fragments of the story of the first professional theatre troupe based in the British North American colonies. In doing so, he tells the story of how colonial elites came to decide they would no longer style themselves British gentlemen, but instead American citizens. London in a Box chronicles the enterprise of David Douglass, founder and manager of the American Theatre, from the 1750s to the climactic 1770s. How he built this network of patrons and theatres and how it all went up in flames as the revolution began is the subject of this witty history. A treat for anyone interested in the world of the American Revolution and an important study for historians of the period.

Book In the Midst of a Revolution

Download or read book In the Midst of a Revolution written by David Hawke and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Midst of a Revolution, originally published in 1961, provides a social history of Pennsylvania in the months before Independence, based on contemporary diaries and newspapers. The author, Dr. David Freeman Hawke, a teacher at Pace University in New York City, examines the events of Pennsylvania in 1776, which made it possible to overthrow the venerable Charter of Privileges of 1701, and to replace it with the more democratic Constitution of 1776. A useful book with informative footnotes and an extensive bibliography.
