Download or read book Lande The Calais Jungle and Beyond written by Hicks, Dan and published by Bristol University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. How can Archaeology help us understand our contemporary world? This ground-breaking book reflects on material, visual and digital culture from the Calais “Jungle” – the informal camp where, before its destruction in October 2016, more than 10,000 displaced people lived. LANDE: The Calais 'Jungle' and Beyond reassesses how we understand ‘crisis’, activism, and the infrastructure of national borders in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, foregrounding the politics of environments, time, and the ongoing legacies of empire. Introducing a major collaborative exhibit at Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum, the book argues that an anthropological focus on duration, impermanence and traces of the most recent past can recentre the ongoing human experiences of displacement in Europe today.

Download or read book Communism in Rural France written by John Bulaitis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Communist Party has traditionally been identified with the urban working class but paradoxically its position as France's main left-wing party was dependent upon support from the countryside. "Communism in Rural France" explores for the first time the party's complex and often misunderstood relationship with agricultural labourers.During 1936 and 1937 a bitter struggle between agricultural workers and farmers swept through parts of the French countryside. Coinciding with the urban 'social explosion' which followed the victory of the Popular Front government, the strikes, farm occupations and increased unionisation panicked farmers and shocked right-wing opinion, which blamed the spread of the 'corrupting' collectivist influences of urban society into the countryside on the French Communist Party."Communism in Rural France" traces the evolution and characteristics of the agricultural workers' movement from the turn of the 20th century through the inter-war years, as well as the response of the government and the resistance organised by farmers during 1936-37. By focussing on agricultural workers, John Bulaitis sheds light on a section of the rural population that has been generally overlooked in French rural and labour history. "Communism in Rural France" explores their relationship with the French Communist Party and illuminates an important and previously neglected aspect of European politics.
Download or read book Authentic Co production of Public Space written by Paola Michialino and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tests the potential of a facilitated action-research approach in participative urban design projects to act as catalysts in countering social violence in distressed quarters of France. It evaluates the FAR programme (Formation Action Recherche pour la coproduction et gestion des espaces publics) in the region Nord – Pas de Calais as a local strategy for achieving the national objectives of social reform – as envisioned by President Mitterand and encapsulated in the national Politique de la Ville. Significantly, this study identifies the critical importance of positive political will at all levels in achieving the goals of the Politique de la Ville, and it provides a possible explanation for the failure of previous attempts to engage residents effectively. It also indicates possible future strategies for planning participative projects where they are intended to promote integrated social, urban and economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol. 2 of the Ancestors of Clifford Earl McAllister includes the family groups of the first 50 of 58 generations. The McAllister family goes back almost 2000 years to ancient Wales and Ancient Ireland, and the Sea Kings of Norway. Related to Prince Henry Sinclair and Winston Churchill, the lines also go back to the Merovingian Kings of Normandy, France and the Welsh Kings in 100 AD. You might find discrepancies the further back you get as spellings vary, dates are estimated, and sometimes a title is included in the name. While original research was done for the first 8 generations, you should use information past that as a 'guide' and not an absolute. Download or read book Redefining Regional French written by David Hornsby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study challenges the orthodox view that emergent regional varieties of French represent no more than an ephemeral dialect residue of little theoretical interest. It follows the life cycle of an obsolescent urban Picard variety, spoken in a mining town in the Pas-de-Calais, and attempts to unravel the complex reasons behind the survival of some local variants at the expense of others. Applying a sociolinguistic model developed by Peter Trudgill, it shows how the processes of levelling and simplification have driven change in a dialect contact situation, giving rise to a new, stable variety or koine. This is compared with other new urban varieties in Sweden and the UK, where different economic, social and demographic conditions have produced very different linguistic outcomes. The emergence of Regional French in the north, it is argued, may herald the start of a new diversification of French in Europe. This book will therefore interest both students of French and of language variation more generally.
