Book excerpt: Three mismatched roommates rescue a drug addict with an expired passport in this fast-paced activist novel set in 2002 in Portland, Oregon. Parts per Million is political. It's personal. It's reading for the resistance--and it's a powerful exploration of how an unlikely band of heroes subverts the status quo. "Parts Per Million is an ambitious first book: it's a thriller and a novel about a friendship in peril and it's a critique of protest culture and it's a love letter to those who are willing to earnestly fight for what they believe, even when it seems that everyone else has given up." -Paul Constant, The Seattle Review of Books

But her life begins to change when she is assigned to the Puppies Behind Bars program, where she trains puppies that will go on to become bomb detecting canines. The puppies melt the armor around her heart, but when she is paroled and confronted by the harsh realities of the streets, Shawanda must decide between her criminal past or the promise of a better future. The problem is, no one in her life understands her-or the bonds that form between dogs and the people that love them. PARTS PER MILLION is a true-crime thriller that tells the real story of four federal bomb dogs, their handlers, and the woman who raised them in prison. We follow the paths of the puppies raised and cared for by Shawanda and her fellow inmates as they go on assignment at the ATF, along the Mexico border, in an active warzone in Afghanistan, and on the mean streets of the Bronx. Each handler is confronted with the challenges of life, relationships, and the complex job of finding explosives and catching criminals, but it is the love that Shawanda instilled in each of the dogs that helps our handlers overcome the odds.

This book was released on 2018-08-25 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding, quantifying, and tracking atmospheric methane and emissions is essential for addressing concerns and informing decisions that affect the climate, economy, and human health and safety. Atmospheric methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) that contributes to global warming. While carbon dioxide is by far the dominant cause of the rise in global average temperatures, methane also plays a significant role because it absorbs more energy per unit mass than carbon dioxide does, giving it a disproportionately large effect on global radiative forcing. In addition to contributing to climate change, methane also affects human health as a precursor to ozone pollution in the lower atmosphere. Improving Characterization of Anthropogenic Methane Emissions in the United States summarizes the current state of understanding of methane emissions sources and the measurement approaches and evaluates opportunities for methodological and inventory development improvements. This report will inform future research agendas of various U.S. agencies, including NOAA, the EPA, the DOE, NASA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
