Book The Evolution of Local Partnerships for Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book The Evolution of Local Partnerships for Sustainable Agriculture written by Lauren Karla Shaw and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many agricultural communities have witnessed the evolution of local partnerships to encourage growers to adopt more sustainable agricultural practices. This study analyzes the evolution and effectiveness of the Sustainable Winegrowing Program (SWP) in Lodi, California. Three different theories of grower behavior (diffusion of innovation, social capital and cultural change) suggest complementary reasons for the effectiveness of sustainability partnerships. Our regression analysis of two years of grower surveys demonstrates that greater participation in the SWP is associated with greater use and more positive attitudes towards sustainable practices. The influence of the program participation has expanded to a broader set of practices over time, consistent with the evolution of the program. Our results provide support for continued development of sustainability partnerships like the SWP.

Book Sustaining California Agriculture in an Uncertain Future

Download or read book Sustaining California Agriculture in an Uncertain Future written by Heather Cooley and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report shows that California agriculture can flourish despite diminishing water supply and future uncertainty from climate change, but it will require great strides in increasing the water efficiency of the agricultural sector. Many farmers and irrigation districts have already been making water-use efficiency improvements. Yet the analysis estimates that potential water savings of 4.5 - 6 million acre-feet each year can be achieved by expanding the use of efficient irrigation technologies and management practices.

Book Extending Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Extending Sustainable Agriculture written by Matthew Hoffman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is composed of three stand-alone papers that study the partnership model of agricultural extension and grower adoption of sustainability practices. The data used in the analyses were collected with mail surveys and semi-structured interviews of winegrape growers and viticulture outreach professionals in three of California's American Viticulture Areas: Central Coast, Lodi, and Napa Valley. In the first paper, "Leveraging Knowledge Networks to Extend Sustainable Agriculture", I compared the usefulness of three pathways for grower learning about sustainable agriculture: experiential, social, and formal. I found that experiential and social learning are growers' preferred learning pathways. Using social network analysis methods, I modeled the knowledge network to identify sets of growers and outreach professionals who are optimally positioned to access and spread knowledge through social learning. I concluded by suggesting a number of "network-smart" extension strategies. The second paper, "Grower Mental Models of Sustainable Agriculture: Linking Cognition to Behavior", presented an analysis of growers' mental model of sustainable agriculture, which provide a window into their views about sustainability and their decision-making around sustainable farm management and practice adoption. Abstract concepts included in the mental model where more prominent than concrete concepts, suggesting that grower decision-making is driven by achieving goals as opposed to implementing specific practices. We also found that growers who subscribe to a greater number of prominent concepts in the mental model behave in more sustainable ways, such as participation in more extension activities and adopting more sustainability practices. In the third paper, "The Influence of Sustainability Partnerships on Grower Adoption of Sustainability Practices in California Viticulture", we explored the question of whether the partnership model of agricultural extension is realizing its primary goal of promoting grower adoption of sustainability practices. We found that growers who participate in more outreach activities also adopt more sustainability practices, which suggest that the partnership model is indeed effective and deserves continued support. The findings presented in all three papers have implications for understanding the partnership model of agricultural extension, the model's transferability across geographies, and the process of grower decision-making and learning about sustainable agriculture. I interpreted my findings in the context of California viticulture and agriculture, and highlighted how they might be applied to improve extension programs.

Book Sustainable Agriculture at the University of California

Download or read book Sustainable Agriculture at the University of California written by Elizabeth Marie Keesling and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the limitations of 'organics' manifest and sustainability continues to elude California, the subsidies that demarcate the scope of sustainable agriculture need to be examined. This case study looks at research and development in sustainable agriculture at the University of California, (UC), focusing on how research and development decisions are made, who is included in making them, and who benefits from them. Using grounded theory, data was gathered through internet research, document analysis, and interviews with key informants at UC's most important sustainable agriculture research centers: the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, (SAREP), in Davis; the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems, (CASFS), in Santa Cruz; and the Agroecology Research and Training, (ART), Laboratory, in Berkeley. There are significant differences between these centers in terms of decision-making processes, research orientations, and development outcomes. SAREP is structured around meeting the needs of a select set of clients, (i.e., industrial farm operators, corporate processors, and transnational distributors), and decision-making is closed to the public. CASFS and ART, in contrast, are structured around meeting the needs of California's diverse communities and unique ecosystems: they engage with communities in need of agri-food development through open forums and partnership models. This study finds that UC undermines the work of agroecology, while its support for sustainable agriculture is nominal.
