ACCOUNT OF PRIVATE M'CUE'S IMPRISONMENT. [TnK following facts in regard to the treatment of M'Cue have, at my request, been furnished me by a gentleman well acquainted with them. They present a picture of despotism and cruelty rarely witnessed in a Christian country, but they bear, at the same time, honorable testimony to the fidelity with which General Grant adhered to the engagements which he contracted at Appomattox Court-house.-- Editor.] From Annapolis he was removed to Baltimore and cast into a negro jail, where his treatment was that of a convict. He was heavily ironed, and confined in a dark, cold cell, and when a fellowprisoner, through the iron-bars of his dungeon, gave him a blanket, the order was given to the prison-guard to take it away. Very soon a man dressed in Confederate uniform was put in the cell with M'Cue, and left to spend the night with him. The stranger made advances toward an acquaintance, asked his fellow-prisoner his name, to what command he belonged, and the charges preferred against him, and at the same time told him that he himself was under charges as a Confederate, and was to be tried by a military commission. He doubted not, he added, that both of them would be sentenced to the gallows. "I have a proposition to make to you, for there is but one way in which we can save our lives--to rush upon the guard, seize their arms, and murder them. In the confusion thus created, an opportunity may occur for our escape." The proposition was so wild and impossible of execution that M'Cue at once saw in it a snare prepared for his destruction. So he very quietly said to his companion," You may attempt to murder the guard and make your escape, but I will have nothing to do with it." He knew he was a...

Book Partisan Life with Mosby s Rangers Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Partisan Life with Mosby s Rangers Abridged Annotated written by Major John Scott and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Singleton Mosby's Rangers bedeviled the Union army for four long years. The Rangers were what we would today call guerillas; units that could make fast raids and get away before the enemy could react. This highly-successful unit became legendary during the war and continues to be an object of fascination by scholars and enthusiasts of the period into the 21st century. This is the official memoir of Mosby's command, written with his cooperation after the war. The author of this work, John Scott, wrote the Partisan Ranger Law in 1862. John Singleton Mosby was a remarkable individual. Highly intelligent, educated, and modest, he held the respect of many on both sides of the war. After the Civil War, he became a Republican and a supporter of Ulysses S. Grant. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mosby and His Men: A Record of the Adventures of That Renowned Partisan Ranger, John S. Mosby, Including the Exploits of Smith, Chapman, Richards, Montjoy, Turner, Russell, Glasscock, and the Men Under Them The blooming fields, the orange-groves and extensive flower-gardens, no longer cheer the tourist or protect the wearied traveller from the burning sun of the South. The Southern flag no longer floats over its brave defenders; but the scenes and trials of the Southern people during this contest cannot be forgotten by those who saw and felt them. The history of the struggle will be written hereafter, when passion shall have cooled, and the historian shall be a philosopher, and not a fanatic. Then many things shall assume a different appearance from that which they now present; but no historian will ever say that the 43d Battalion of Virginia Cavalry proved recreant to their duty. To Colonel Mosby's father and mother, I return my most sincere thanks for assistance rendered me when I commenced my enterprise. To George Palmer, Esq., of Richmond, Va., I tender my obligations for similar favors rendered in 1860; while Major Richards, Captains Glasscock and Richards, and other members of the command, will please accept my grateful remembrance for the encouragement given me in my feeble efforts to narrate the deeds of heroism done by our command. Book Col John Singleton Mosby In The News 1862 1916

Download or read book Col John Singleton Mosby In The News 1862 1916 written by V. P. Hughes and published by Shotwell Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2022-04-10 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on the life and times of Civil War partisan leader, Col. John Singleton Mosby. It is derived from newspaper articles written about and by the man from 1862 when he first came to the attention of the national press, through 1916, the year of his death. During the transcription and assembly of thousands of articles, it became apparent that previous narratives of Mosby's life were badly warped by contemporary accounts that were both inaccurate and decidedly prejudiced. But it was also obvious that there were far more accurate accounts presenting a different and more nuanced perspective on the man.
