Book Particulate Matter Science for Policy Makers

Download or read book Particulate Matter Science for Policy Makers written by Peter H. McMurry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-29 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particulate Matter Science for Policy Makers: A NARSTO Assessment was commissioned by NARSTO, a cooperative public-private sector organization of Canada, Mexico and the United States. It is a concise and comprehensive discussion of the current understanding by atmospheric scientists of airborne particulate matter (PM). Its goal is to provide policy makers who implement air-quality standards with this relevant and needed scientific information. The primary audience for this volume will be regulators, scientists, and members of industry, all of whom have a stake in effective PM management. It will also inform exposure and health scientists, who investigate causal hypotheses of health impacts, characterize exposure, and conduct epidemiological and toxicological studies.

Book Sampling of Particulate Materials Theory and Practice

Download or read book Sampling of Particulate Materials Theory and Practice written by Pierre Gy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geomathematics 4: Sampling of Particulate Materials: Theory and Practice reviews the theory and practice of sampling particulate solids, such as ores and concentrates. With examples borrowed from the mining, metallurgical, and cement industries, the book examines particulate materials of vegetable and mineral origin, including cereals, oil seeds, sugar beets, granulated drosses or slags, bars, plates, and ingots. Organized into nine parts encompassing 34 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the theory of sampling and sampling-error generating mechanisms. It then discusses the continuous selection and discrete models of the increment sampling process and the materialization of punctual increments. It explains the splitting process and its practical implementation in sampling. Lot and sample preparation, resolution of sampling problems, and problems associated with commercial sampling are also discussed. The book also describes the detection of measurement or sampling biases and inconspicuous losses of material, and the design of automatic sampling plants. This book is a valuable resource for geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and analysts.

Book Guidance for Obtaining Representative Analytical Laboratory Subsamples from Particulate Laboratory Samples

Download or read book Guidance for Obtaining Representative Analytical Laboratory Subsamples from Particulate Laboratory Samples written by National Exposure Research Laboratory (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ongoing research program has been established to experimentally verify the application of the Gy theory to environmental samples, which serves as a supporting basis for the materials presented in this guidance. Research results from studies performed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) have confirmed that the application of the Gy sampling theory to environmental heterogeneous particulate materials is the appropriate state-of-the-science approach for obtaining representative laboratory subsamples. This document provides general guidelines for obtaining representative subsamples for the laboratory analysis of particulate materials using the 'correct' sampling practices and the 'correct' sampling devices based on Gy theory. Besides providing background and theory, this document gives guidance on: sampling and comminution tools, sample characterization and assessment, developing a sampling plan using a general sampling strategy, and reporting recommendations. Considerations are given to: the constitution and the degree of heterogeneity of the material being sampled, the methods used for sample collection (including what proper tools to use), what it is that the sample is supposed to represent, the mass (sample support) of the sample needed to be representative, and the bounds of what 'representative' actually means. A glossary and a comprehensive bibliography have been provided, which should be consulted for more details.

Book Sampling Surface and Subsurface Particle size Distributions in Wadable Gravel and Cobble bed Streams for Analyses in Sediment Transport Hydraulics and Streambed Monitoring

Download or read book Sampling Surface and Subsurface Particle size Distributions in Wadable Gravel and Cobble bed Streams for Analyses in Sediment Transport Hydraulics and Streambed Monitoring written by Kristin Bunte and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides guidance for sampling surface and subsurface sediment from wadable gravel-and cobble-bed streams. After a short introduction to streams types and classifications in gravel-bed rivers, the document explains the field and laboratory measurement of particle sizes and the statistical analysis of particle-size distributions. Analysis of particle parameters, including shape, density, and bulk density are also discussed. The document describes the spatial variability of bed-material particle sizes as well as the horizontal and vertical structure of particle deposits. The discussion of sampling procedures and equipment helps the user to make appropriate selections that support the sampling objective. Sample-size estimates may be obtained from empirical data or computed from statistical relationships between sample size and accuracy. The document explains a variety of methods, their usage and prerequisites. A detailed discussion of sampling schemes guides the user to select appropriate spatial sampling patterns necessary to produce representative samples.
