Book excerpt: Excerpt from Particulars of the Life of a Dissenting Minister My Dear Children, I Inscribe this to you, who know the author, that you may learn to respect the principles of conscience by which your father has ever endeavoured to direct his conduct, and which, if they shall be allowed to direct yours, will support you under as great calamities as he has endured, should they, contrary to my earnest wishes and prayers, visit you in your future lives. As you have little other hope before you but that which may arise from your own exertions and virtues, it may not be unserviceable to you to observe how diligence, economy, and independence of mind, exercised on my part and that of your mother, have hitherto supplied you and me with many things necessary to respectability and comfort, under the most unfavorable circumstances that commonly attend any condition of human life. Excerpt: ...suspected that the young Socinian preacher was desirous of obtaining an antagonist merely for the sake of acquiring some celebrity, and making a noise in a quiet town. I consulted with the old gentleman whose pulpit I supplied, and he said, " Let him alone, let him alone, --ten years hence he will either be a Christian or an infidel; he is now neither one nor the other. " Finding that he could not attract a theological notice from thedissenters, the young man tried what he could do with the church, so he attacked the establishment, preached against tithes, the Thirty-nine Articles, and the Athanasian Creed; he also wrote long letters in the county newspaper, insulting the whole body of the clergy, calling them, by implication, knaves or fools, but telling them at the same time, what a great respect he had for their hearts and understandings. It was all in vain; he could excite no attention; for all that he could say was but a repetition of the old sophisms of Tom Paine and others of that class, which were all new to this young gentleman, but stale enough to the rest of the world. I have introduced this matter in this place because it was suggested by a mention of this liberal cutler, who, notwithstanding all his declarations, did, some time after I left the town of X--, join himself to the Socinians. I used very frequently to talk to him about the matter, and to caution him concerning the danger in which he stood; but he replied that it was but fair to hear both sides, and that he was not afraid that his faith could be shaken, and that it was only following the advice of the apostle, to try all things and hold fast that which is best. But I thought that a man could not know much about Christianity if he did not know when he had...

Book James Owen and the Defense of Moderate Nonconformity

Download or read book James Owen and the Defense of Moderate Nonconformity written by Jason Matossian and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period of Revolution and Toleration in England was filled with rapid change, political uncertainty, and ecclesiastical volatility. Still recovering from the strife of Civil War and a divisive Restoration, the relationship between the Church of England and Nonconformists remained deeply strained. Although Dissenters were granted the right to gather for worship under Toleration, their legitimacy was regularly challenged. Within this context, a variety of significant controversies arose in which James Owen, a Welsh Presbyterian minister, played a prominent role and was a leading voice for moderate Nonconformity. Along with a group of moderate Nonconformist friends like Edmund Calamy, Philip and Matthew Henry, and Francis Tallents, Owen defended a version of Protestant ecumenism. This was a theological conviction that (1) the unity of the Protestant Church was indispensable and (2) this unity was to be found in agreement on essential doctrines, not in sharing ecclesiastical structures. Owen, along with his associates, defended the Dissenters' separation from the Church of England as biblically sanctioned and at the same time emphasized that such separation was not schismatic. Owen's clear, biblically articulate, and historically informed writing made his contribution to the period of Toleration significant and influential.

David Powell, a Minister of the New Church Signified by the New Jerusalem in the Apocalypse: Together With Eight of His Sermons But I know of no record having been made of what occurred during this period of my life; and my own memory is not suffi cient to give its history now. Hence, as I have stated, but little can now be said about it. I simply remember of having heard my parents say, that I was not a very healthy infant; for, when quite young, I had seven large boils on my head at the same time, and that all were lanced by the physician at one visit. This was surely sufficient to carry ofi' corruption enough to make me a healthier child, if not a better boy.
