Book excerpt: Excerpt from Particular Account of the Dreadful Fire at Richmond, Virginia, December 26, 1811: Which Destroyed the Theatre and the House Adjoining, and in Which More Than Sixty Persons Were Either Burnt to Death, or Destroyed in Attempting to Make Their Escape How can we describe the scene! No pen can paint it; no imagination can conceive it. A whole Theatre wrapt in flames - a gay and animated assembly suddenly thrown on the very verge of the grave - many of them, oh! How many! Precipitated in a moment into eternity youth, and beauty, and old age, and genius overwhelmed in one promiscuous ruin - shrieks', groans, and human agony in every shape - this is the heart rending scene that we are called upon to describe. We sink under the effort. Reader excuse our feelings, for they are the feelings of a whole city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Notorious in the Neighborhood

Download or read book Notorious in the Neighborhood written by Joshua D. Rothman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laws and cultural norms militated against interracial sex in Virginia before the Civil War, and yet it was ubiquitous in cities, towns, and plantation communities throughout the state. In Notorious in the Neighborhood, Joshua Rothman examines the full spectrum of interracial sexual relationships under slavery--from Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings, and the intertwined interracial families of Monticello and Charlottesville to commercial sex in Richmond, the routinized sexual exploitation of enslaved women, and adultery across the color line. He explores the complex considerations of legal and judicial authorities who handled cases involving illicit sex and describes how the customary toleration of sex across the color line both supported and undermined racism and slavery in the early national and antebellum South. White Virginians allowed for an astonishing degree of flexibility and fluidity within a seemingly rigid system of race and interracial relations, Rothman argues, and the relationship between law and custom regarding racial intermixture was always shifting. As a consequence, even as whites never questioned their own racial supremacy, the meaning and significance of racial boundaries, racial hierarchy, and ultimately of race itself always stood on unstable ground--a reality that whites understood and about which they demonstrated increasing anxiety as the nation's sectional crisis intensified.

Book The Richmond Theater Fire

Download or read book The Richmond Theater Fire written by Meredith Henne Baker and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the day after Christmas in 1811, the state of Virginia lost its governor and almost one hundred citizens in a devastating nighttime fire that consumed a Richmond playhouse. The gruesome fire amplified the capital's reputation for vice and led to an upsurge in anti-theater criticism that spread throughout the country and across the Atlantic. In The Richmond Theater Fire, the first book about the event and its aftermath, Meredith Henne Baker explores a forgotten catastrophe and its wide societal impact. The story of transformation comes alive through survivor accounts of slaves, actresses, ministers, and statesmen. Investigating private letters, diaries, and sermons, among other rare or unpublished documents, Baker views the event and its outcomes through the fascinating lenses of early nineteenth-century theater, architecture, and faith, and reveals a rich and vital untold story from America's past.
