Book Particle Tracking Model PTM in the SMS III Tutorial with Examples

Download or read book Particle Tracking Model PTM in the SMS III Tutorial with Examples written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Dredging Operations and Engineering Research (DOER) Technical Note (TN) is a tutorial with examples of the PTM, developed jointly by the Coastal Inlets Research Program (CIRP) and DOER Program. This note is applicable to Version 1.0 of PTM. Demirbilek et al. (2005a) describe the PTM interface, and an overview of features and capabilities of the PTM is presented in Demirbilek et al. (2005b). The theoretical formulation and implementation of the PTM are given in a technical report (MacDonald and Davies, in preparation). The PTM is a Lagrangian particle-tracking model that is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Surface Water Modeling System, SMS (Zundel 2005, Zundel et al. 1998). It employs a Lagrangian method of tracking particle pathways to estimate migration of sediment particles as influenced by waves and currents. For its input, the PTM requires a geometric surface defining the bottom elevation (depth) over which water level, current velocity vectors, and waves are available at each point in the modeling domain. The user specifies sediment sources and model parameters to perform a PTM simulation within the SMS for a given set of hydrodynamic input (waves, water levels, and currents). The SMS includes commands for layout of the sediment sources, specification of the numerical parameters, and management of the Eulerian quantities (water depth, surface elevation, current velocity).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes the coupling between the Particle Tracking Model (PTM) and the Coastal Modeling System (CMS). It familiarizes users with the PTM-CMS coupling interface as implemented inside the Surfacewater Modeling System Version 10 (SMS10). The steps necessary for preparing solutions of two-dimensional CMS-Flow and CMS-Wave models for input to the PTM are described, and two examples are given.

Book Particle Tracking Model PTM in the SMS I Graphical Interface

Download or read book Particle Tracking Model PTM in the SMS I Graphical Interface written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Dredging Operations and Environmental Research (DOER) Technical Note (TN) describes the graphical interface for the Particle Tracking Model (PTM). The Coastal Inlets Research Program (CIRP) and the DOER Program are jointly developing the PTM. The PTM is described in a series of three technical notes. This technical note, Part I, describes the graphical user interface of Version 1.0 of PTM. Part II (Demirbilek et al. 2005a) provides an overview of general features and capabilities of PTM. Part III (Demirbilek et al. 2005b) is a tutorial with examples. The PTM has been developed for application to dredging and coastal projects, including dredged material dispersion and fate, sediment pathway and fate, and constituent transport. A technical report (MacDonald and Davies, in preparation) provides details about the theory and implementation aspects of the PTM. PTM methodology is based on a parcel calculation technique, in which parcels represent a given mass of sediment subjected to the same forces and exhibiting the same kinematics as a single sediment particle. Each parcel has its own set of attributes (e.g., grain diameter, specific gravity), which influence parcel behavior (entrainment, transport, settling). The PTM employs a Lagrangian particle tracking technique to estimate migration of sediment particles as influenced by the hydrodynamic forcing inputs, including current velocity and wave fields. This approach compliments the Eularian sediment transport and morphological models, and can provide information about a specified subset of sediment processes. This information may be applied in projects without the more resource-intensive application of a Eularian sediment transport model.

Book Water Resources Management and Modeling

Download or read book Water Resources Management and Modeling written by Purna Nayak and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrology is the science that deals with the processes governing the depletion and replenishment of water resources of the earth's land areas. The purpose of this book is to put together recent developments on hydrology and water resources engineering. First section covers surface water modeling and second section deals with groundwater modeling. The aim of this book is to focus attention on the management of surface water and groundwater resources. Meeting the challenges and the impact of climate change on water resources is also discussed in the book. Most chapters give insights into the interpretation of field information, development of models, the use of computational models based on analytical and numerical techniques, assessment of model performance and the use of these models for predictive purposes. It is written for the practicing professionals and students, mathematical modelers, hydrogeologists and water resources specialists.

Book Water Pollution XII

Download or read book Water Pollution XII written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-05-26 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Pollution XII contains the proceedings of the 12th International Conference in the series of Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Water Pollution. The book will be of interest to scientists, managers and academics from different areas of water contamination. The environmental problems caused by the increase of pollutant loads discharged into natural water bodies required the formation of a framework for regulation and control. This framework needs to be based on scientific results that relate pollutant discharge with changes in water quality. The results of these studies allow industry to apply more efficient methods of controlling and treating waste loads, and water authorities to enforce appropriate regulations regarding this matter. Environmental problems are essentially interdisciplinary. Engineers and scientists working in this field must be familiar with a wide range of issues including the physical processes of mixing and dilution, chemical and biological processes, mathematical modelling, data acquisition and measurement to name but a few. In view of the scarcity of available data, it is important that experiences are shared on an international basis. Thus, a continuous exchange of information between scientists from different countries is essential. Topics covered include: Water quality; Groundwater and aquifer issues; Environmental monitoring and control; Water management; Remediation; Pollution prevention; Lakes and rivers; Agricultural contamination; Wastewater treatment and management; Offshore pollution and oil spills; Emerging technologies; Biosensors and biosystems; Health risk studies; Modelling and simulation; Pharmaceutical and pesticides pollution; Monitoring and modelling integration; Risk assessments; Socio-economic-political consequences; Education and training.

Book excerpt: Tracking particles through a moving field, such as flowing air, ground, or surface water, is not only a powerful computational method but can also provide insightful visualizations. I have employed this process for a variety of problems from airborne contamination, thermal pollution, and contaminant transport in groundwater. I have even used it to successfully model the mixing of fluorescent dye through the confluence of three pumps in order to distinguish the time of arrival at the destination. While the Lagrangian method (based on time as the independent parameter) is most often used, the Hamiltonian method (based on time as a dependent parameter) can be much faster. Both are developed in this text, which includes many examples. Diffusion (spreading based on material properties) and also dispersion (based on local velocities) are derived, implemented, and illustrated in the text. Flow in factures within porous media, essential to accurately modeling karst formations, is also covered.
