It describes the features and capabilities of a new Particle Tracking Model (PTM) for analysis of sediment transport and sediment pathways in coastal waters, estuaries, rivers, and waterways. This note is applicable to Version 1.0 of PTM. The PTM graphical user interface is described in the first TN (Demirbilek et al. 2005a) in this series. A tutorial with examples is described in the third TN (Demirbilek et al. 2005b). PTM has been designed to meet the needs of two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) research programs, the Coastal Inlets Research Program (CIRP) and the DOER Program. Examples are presented that illustrate key features of the PTM s application in coastal and estuarine environments. Accurate prediction of the fate of sediments and other waterborne particulates is a key element in coastal engineering and dredging operations. The PTM simulates sediment movement in a flow field, including erosion, transport, settling, and deposition. In addition to predicting sediment transport pathways and sediment fate, the model produces maps of sediment transport processes, such as sediment mobility, which can be useful in understanding sediment behavior. The reader is referred to MacDonald and Davies (2005) for a comprehensive description of the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation aspects of the PTM.

Book excerpt: This Dredging Operations and Environmental Research (DOER) Technical Note (TN) describes the graphical interface for the Particle Tracking Model (PTM). The Coastal Inlets Research Program (CIRP) and the DOER Program are jointly developing the PTM. The PTM is described in a series of three technical notes. This technical note, Part I, describes the graphical user interface of Version 1.0 of PTM. Part II (Demirbilek et al. 2005a) provides an overview of general features and capabilities of PTM. Part III (Demirbilek et al. 2005b) is a tutorial with examples. The PTM has been developed for application to dredging and coastal projects, including dredged material dispersion and fate, sediment pathway and fate, and constituent transport. A technical report (MacDonald and Davies, in preparation) provides details about the theory and implementation aspects of the PTM. PTM methodology is based on a parcel calculation technique, in which parcels represent a given mass of sediment subjected to the same forces and exhibiting the same kinematics as a single sediment particle. Each parcel has its own set of attributes (e.g., grain diameter, specific gravity), which influence parcel behavior (entrainment, transport, settling). The PTM employs a Lagrangian particle tracking technique to estimate migration of sediment particles as influenced by the hydrodynamic forcing inputs, including current velocity and wave fields. This approach compliments the Eularian sediment transport and morphological models, and can provide information about a specified subset of sediment processes. This information may be applied in projects without the more resource-intensive application of a Eularian sediment transport model.

The theoretical formulation and implementation of the PTM are given in a technical report (MacDonald and Davies, in preparation). The PTM is a Lagrangian particle-tracking model that is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Surface Water Modeling System, SMS (Zundel 2005, Zundel et al. 1998). It employs a Lagrangian method of tracking particle pathways to estimate migration of sediment particles as influenced by waves and currents. For its input, the PTM requires a geometric surface defining the bottom elevation (depth) over which water level, current velocity vectors, and waves are available at each point in the modeling domain. The user specifies sediment sources and model parameters to perform a PTM simulation within the SMS for a given set of hydrodynamic input (waves, water levels, and currents). The SMS includes commands for layout of the sediment sources, specification of the numerical parameters, and management of the Eulerian quantities (water depth, surface elevation, current velocity).

Based on a literature study, it describes the most important influencing factors and presents a database for particle parameterization. It investigates the separation process in two steps with differing levels of process abstraction. The first step involves numerical separation in a vertically oscillating box with airflow, and in the context of a sensitivity study, investigates the effect of selected material, contact and operating parameters on the target variables’ separation time and grain purity. In the second step, the numerical separation process was performed in a 200 mm wide segment of a combine harvester cleaning device. The numerical results were then compared with experimental investigations in order to confirm the method’s applicability.

Book excerpt: California's Bay-Delta estuary is a biologically diverse estuarine ecosystem that plays a central role in the distribution of California's water from the state's wetter northern regions to its southern, arid, and populous cities and agricultural areas. Recently, the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service required changes (reasonable and prudent alternatives, or RPAs) in water operations and related actions to avoid jeopardizing the continued existence and potential for recovery of threatened species of fish. Those changes have reduced the amount of water available for other uses, and the tensions that resulted have been exacerbated by recent dry years. The complexity of the problem of the decline of the listed species and the difficulty of identifying viable solutions have led to disagreements, including concerns that some of the actions in the RPAs might be ineffective and might cause harm and economic disruptions to water users, and that some of the actions specified in the RPAs to help one or more of the listed species might harm others. In addition, some have suggested that the agencies might be able to meet their legal obligation to protect species with less economic disruptions to other water users. The National Research Council examines the issue in the present volume to conclude that most of the actions proposed by two federal agencies to protect endangered and threatened fish species through water diversions in the California Bay-Delta are "scientifically justified." But less well-supported by scientific analyses is the basis for the specific environmental triggers that would indicate when to reduce the water diversions required by the actions.
