Book Particle Acceleration and Kinematics in Solar Flares

Download or read book Particle Acceleration and Kinematics in Solar Flares written by Markus Aschwanden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade we entered a new exploration phase of solar flare physics, equipped with powerful spacecraft such as Yohkoh, SoHO, and TRACE that pro vide us detail-rich and high-resolution images of solar flares in soft X-rays, hard X -rays, and extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths. Moreover, the large-area and high sensitivity detectors on the Compton GRO spacecraft recorded an unprecedented number of high-energy photons from solar flares that surpasses all detected high energy sources taken together from the rest of the universe, for which CGRO was mainly designed to explore. However, morphological descriptions of these beau tiful pictures and statistical catalogs of these huge archives of solar data would not convey us much understanding of the underlying physics, if we would not set out to quantify physical parameters from these data and would not subject these measurements to theoretical models. Historically, there has always been an unsatisfactory gap between traditional astronomy that dutifully describes the mor phology of observations, and the newer approach of astrophysics, which starts with physical concepts from first principles and analyzes astronomical data with the goal to confirm or disprove theoretical models. In this review we attempt to bridge this yawning gap and aim to present the recent developments in solar flare high-energy physics from a physical point of view, structuring the observations and analysis results according to physical processes, such as particle acceleration, propagation, energy loss, kinematics, and radiation signatures.

Book Kinematic Methods in High energy Physics

Download or read book Kinematic Methods in High energy Physics written by Vitaliĭ Iosifovich Golʹdanskiĭ and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nice monograph intended to serve the practical needs of graduate students and researchers. Detail and coverage in good balance; in seven chapters treats relativistic fundamentals, the kinematics of two-particle and three-particle decays, multiple hadron production (including statistical, thermodynamics and hydrodynamic models) and related topics. For the price (which will keep the book out of the hands of many of those to whom it is addressed) one might have expected professionally-drawn figures and mathematical typography a bit easier on the eye. Book Water Wave Kinematics

Download or read book Water Wave Kinematics written by A. Tørum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water wave kinematics is a central field of study in ocean and coastal engineering. The wave forces on structures as well as sand erosion both on coastlines and in the ocean are to a large extent governed by the local distribution of velocities and accelerations of the water particles. Our knowledge of waves has generally been derived from measurements of the water surface elevations. The reason for this is that the surface elevations have been of primary interest and fairly cheap and reliable instruments have been developed for such measurements. The water wave kinematics has then been derived from the surface elevation information by various theories. However. the different theories for the calculation of water particle velocities and acceleration have turned out to give significant differences in the calculated responses of structures. In recent years new measurement techniques have made it possible to make accurate velocity measurements. Hence. the editors deemed it to be useful to bring together a group of experts working actively as researchers in the field of water wave kinematics. These experts included theoreticians as well as experimentalists on wave kinematics. It was also deemed useful to include experts on the response of structures to have their views from a structural engineering point of view on what information is really needed on water wave kinematics.

Book Introduction to Continuum Mechanics

Download or read book Introduction to Continuum Mechanics written by W Michael Lai and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuum Mechanics is a branch of physical mechanics that describes the macroscopic mechanical behavior of solid or fluid materials considered to be continuously distributed. It is fundamental to the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical and bioengineering. This time-tested text has been used for over 35 years to introduce junior and senior-level undergraduate engineering students, as well as graduate students, to the basic principles of continuum mechanics and their applications to real engineering problems. The text begins with a detailed presentation of the coordinate invariant quantity, the tensor, introduced as a linear transformation. This is then followed by the formulation of the kinematics of deformation, large as well as very small, the description of stresses and the basic laws of continuum mechanics. As applications of these laws, the behaviors of certain material idealizations (models) including the elastic, viscous and viscoelastic materials, are presented. This new edition offers expanded coverage of the subject matter both in terms of details and contents, providing greater flexibility for either a one or two-semester course in either continuum mechanics or elasticity. Although this current edition has expanded the coverage of the subject matter, it nevertheless uses the same approach as that in the earlier editions - that one can cover advanced topics in an elementary way that go from simple to complex, using a wealth of illustrative examples and problems. It is, and will remain, one of the most accessible textbooks on this challenging engineering subject. Significantly expanded coverage of elasticity in Chapter 5, including solutions of some 3-D problems based on the fundamental potential functions approach New section at the end of Chapter 4 devoted to the integral formulation of the field equations Seven new appendices appear at the end of the relevant chapters to help make each chapter more self-contained Expanded and improved problem sets providing both intellectual challenges and engineering applications

Book Particle Physics An Introduction

Download or read book Particle Physics An Introduction written by M Leon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Physics: An Introduction provides information pertinent to particle physics, including symmetries, quantum mechanics, particle kinematics, and wave equations. This book explains the Lorentz transformation, which relates events as seen in two inertial coordinate systems. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the general relationship between energy and momentum. This text then explains the various components of the electric and magnetic fields, which are related by Maxwell's equations. Other chapters review the abstract formalism of quantum mechanics as well as explain the functions of cross sections and decay rates in particle physics. This book discusses as well the function of quantum field theory in predicting S-matrix elements and cross sections that can be compared with experiments. The final chapter deals with strong interaction dynamics as well as introduces Regge poles and dispersion relations. Seniors and graduate students involved in the study of physics will find this book extremely useful.

Book Wave Kinematics and Environmental Forces

Download or read book Wave Kinematics and Environmental Forces written by Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In determining the response of offshore structures, it is of utmost importance to determine, in the most correct manner, all factors which contribute to the total force acting on these structures. Applying the Morison formula (Morison et. al. , 1950) to calculate forces on offshore slender structures, uncertainties related to the understanding of the wave climate, the hydrodynamic force coefficients and the kinematics of ocean waves represent the most important contributions to the uncertainties in the prediction of the total forces on these structures (Haver and Gudmestad, 1992). Traditional calculation of forces on offshore structures involves the use of regular waves with the following non-linearities inco1porated use of regular wave theories inco1porating higher order terms use of Morison equation having a nonlinear drag term inclusion of the effect of the free surface by integrating all contributions to total forces and moments from the sea floor to the free surface of the waves In order to describe the sea more realistically, the ocean surface is to be described as an irregular sea surface represented by its energy spectrum. The associated decomposition of the sea surface is given as a linear sum of linear waves. The total force is found by integrating the contribution from all components in the wave spectrum to the free surface. The kinematics of each component must therefore be determined.
