Book excerpt: Background: Refugee women face and must overcome difficulties in assessing mainstream health care services because of language and cultural barriers. A more comprehensive understanding is needed to develop culturally sensitive and appropriate health education and promotion materials. The participatory video documentary (PVD) format allows for this by giving women a new skill, fostering dialogue among cultural groups, testing a new format for participatory involvement, and empowering women to create an educational piece that can be shared with others. In PVD, participants make their own film to illustrate and highlight the issues important to them. The goal of this project was to create a video documenting the training experience of an Atlanta-based refugee health promoters group organized by the Refugee Women's Network (RWN) for use in future training sessions for health educators, and as a marketing and educational tool. The combination of both participatory video documentary and health education training offers a unique opportunity to research how they can be combined and used in educational and training-based settings. This is significant, as little research has explored the process of participation or the experience of participation from the perspective of community members themselves. Additionally, there is little research on using video documentary as a participatory method with female refugee populations in the United States. Methods: The 2008-2009 RWN Health Promoters, a group of 17 refugee women from 6 countries living in Atlanta, GA, selected and prioritized health care topics to be covered in the training sessions and then chose which aspects of the training they wished to film. Once the training sessions were completed, the women edited and created a participatory video documentary of their experiences. Results/Lessons learned: A better understanding of the role and potential influence of participatory video both with this population and with this medium was determined as a result of this project. In the final stage of the process, the dissemination, their video will influence positive change to other health promoter groups, as well as others working in the field of refugee social services. The paper concludes with a series of questions and final thoughts highlighting the reflective process of lessons learned in its application.
