Book The Effects of Participation and Goal Difficulty on Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Participation and Goal Difficulty on Performance written by Gary P. Latham and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research comparing the effects of assigned versus participatively set goals on performance were essentially tests of the null hypothesis in that goal difficulty level was not systematically manipulated. The present laboratory study investigated the effects of assigned versus participatively set goals, and the effects of varying goal difficulty level on an arithmetic task. Eighty-six college students were assigned to either a participative goal condition or one of three assigned goal conditions. In two of the assigned goal conditions participants were assigned goals to those set in the participative condition, the difference being that individuals in one group were assigned goals at random and those in the other group were assigned goals on the basis of their premeasure scores. Participants in the third assigned goal condition were randomly assigned a goal in the top quartile of the goals set participatively. As hypothesized, individuals with hard assigned goals had higher performance than peers with lower goals set in a participative manner. Contrary to modern organizational theory, individuals with participatively set goals did not have higher performance than those with assigned goals of equal difficulty. Personality traits were not found to moderate the effects of goal setting on performance. (Author).

Book The Motivational Effects of Participation Versus Goal Setting on Performance

Download or read book The Motivational Effects of Participation Versus Goal Setting on Performance written by Gary P. Latham and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 3 x 2 factorial design was used to examine the motivational effects of participation in decision making (PDM) versus goal setting on performance. Seventy-two college students were randomly assigned to one of six conditions. The task selected for the study was a toy assembly project adapted from a business game used in an assessment center. The motivational effects of PDM were isolated from the cognitive by imposing the ideas generated through PDM on another condition. Assigned/participative goals were set in terms of the number of toys that could be produced within a 20-minute period. Goal difficulty was held constant between the two conditions. The results showed a significant main effect for goal setting only. Both forms of goal setting led to performance that was significantly higher than that which occurred in the do best condition. The interaction effect between goal setting and decision making was not significant. (Author).

Book The Relationship Between Participation in Goal Setting Company Size and Performance Commitment Acceptance and Job Satisfaction in the United States and Macedonia

Download or read book The Relationship Between Participation in Goal Setting Company Size and Performance Commitment Acceptance and Job Satisfaction in the United States and Macedonia written by Kristin Michelle King and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While some researchers have suggested that participative goal setting increases performance, acceptance, commitment, and satisfaction, others have suggested that it does not. Additionally, much research on goal setting has been done in the US while none has been done in Macedonia. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between participation in goal setting and company size on these variables and to determine if there are differences in the effects of participation in goal setting in the US and Macedonia. The independent variables were country, company size, and type of participation and dependent variables were performance, commitment, acceptance, and satisfaction. Participants also completed Hofstede's (1994) VSM and demographic questions. Workers from the US scored significantly higher on all dependent variables. There were no significant differences in participation versus assigned goal setting on the four dependent variables. Multiple regressions revealed that some VSM questions predicted the four dependent variables.
