Download or read book Inter Basin Water Transfer written by Fereidoun Ghassemi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2007. Increasing demands for irrigation, domestic and industrial water have generated a massive growth world-wide in the number of large water infrastructure projects involving the transfer of water from basins considered to have surplus water to those where the demand for water has exceeded or is expected to exceed supplies. Using the experiences of projects in Australia, United States, Canada, China and India, this book examines case studies within the diverse geographical, climatic, economic, and policy regimes operating in these countries. It examines the water resources of Australia, the driest inhabited continent, and explores inter-basin water transfer projects in the United States, Canada, China and India, examining their benefits and impacts within these nations' contrasting economies and governance systems. This comprehensive and well-illustrated text will be of great interest to professionals and researchers in the fields of hydrology, water resources, and to those engaged in environmental science, policy and regulation.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March, 2004, Water Survey of Canada and the Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences co-hosted a workshop in Yellowknife to discuss how to improve our community's abilities to predict streamflow in the Mackenzie Valley and similar cold regions of Canada. The workshop's objectives were to: 1) provide outreach to practitioners of the results of recent studies in cold water regions hydrological regimes in the context of predicting streamflow; 2) assess "state of the art" techniques to predict streamflow in ungauged basins in northern landscapes, and; 3) define technical needs and recommend a research agenda that can deliver these over the next decade. This book summarizes presentations by invited speakers on the subjects of: statisical hydrology and hydrometric network planning; cold regions hydrological processes; application of hydrological models to cold regions; and advances in distributed hydrological modelling.

Book Urban Water Management

Download or read book Urban Water Management written by Roumen Arsov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban population growth dramatically alters material and energy fluxes in the affected areas, with concomitant changes in landscape, altered fluxes of water, sediment, chemicals and pathogens and increased releases of waste heat. These changes then impact on urban ecosystems, including water resources and result in their degradation. Such circumstances make the provision of water services to urban populations even more challenging. Changing weather patterns, rising temperature and large variations in precipitation contr- ute to increased damages, caused by weather related disasters, including floods. Ones of the major contributors to increasing flood peaks are land use changes and particularl- urban development. Consequently, there is a need to look for low environmental impact land development and to manage runoff in urban areas by storm water management. Much progress in the management of urban waters has been achieved in the most - vanced jurisdictions, but much more remains to be done. In this respect the EC Water Framework Directive can provide some guidance. Urban water management issues are particularly important in the countries in transition in Central and Eastern Europe. During the last decade political, economical and social changes in the countries under transition have influenced almost every element of the public sector, including water services. There is an urgent need for exchange of information among various countries on this issue and for identification of best approaches to achieving this transition.
