As the commercial production of software systems moves toward being a traditional industry, automation will necessarily play a more substantial role in this industry, just as it plays a key role in the production of traditional commodities. SAIG aims at promoting the development and the application of foundational techniques for supporting automatic program generation. A key goal of SAIG is to provide a unique forum for both theoreticians and practitioners to present their results and ideas to an audience from a diverse background. This year we are fortunate to have three in?uential invited speakers: Krzysztof Czarnecki (DaimlerChrysler), Tim Sheard (OGI School of Science and Engineering), and Mitchell Wand (Northeastern University). The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on the one hand and soundly based practice on the other.
