Book Silviculture

Download or read book Silviculture written by Ralph D. Nyland and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silviculture: Concepts and Applications reflects a belief that all the tools of silviculture have a useful role in modern forestry. Through careful analysis and creative planning, foresters can address a wide array of commodity and nonmarket interests and opportunities while maintaining dynamic and resilient forests. A landowner’s needs, circumstances, and site conditions guide a silviculturist’s judgment and decision making in finding the best ways to integrate the biologic-ecologic, economic-financial, and managerial-administrative requirements at hand. The Third Edition of this influential text provides a foundational basis for rigorous discussion of techniques. The inclusion of numerous real-world examples and balanced coverage of past and current practices broadens the concept of silviculture and the ways that managers can use it to address both traditional and emerging interests in forests. A thorough discussion of new and proven interpretations increasingly directs the attention of foresters toward the role silviculture plays in creating, maintaining, rehabilitating, and restoring forests that can sustain an expanding variety of ecosystem services.

Book excerpt: Report providing a subjective assessment of the scope, applicability, and overall reliability of existing published references related to natural regeneration of white, Engelmann, and black spruce in North America and a synopsis of references on the subject. The references are listed alphabetically by author for each of 563 references, based on a dBASE IV database coded according to 105 keywords. The database allows the user to search geographically, by species of spruce, by forest section within Canada, or by any of the keywords listed. The emphasis is on white spruce in a boreal mixedwood setting but also includes information on natural regeneration of Engelmann spruce and upland black spruce, plus a limited amount of Norway spruce. Most of the references are from the 1990s.

Book Stand Development After Partial Cutting of Mature Mixed Stands of White Spruce and Aspen in Manitoba

Download or read book Stand Development After Partial Cutting of Mature Mixed Stands of White Spruce and Aspen in Manitoba written by W. J. Ball and published by Canadian Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Riding Mountain Experimental Forest Area of south-west Manitoba, stands of 100-year-old mixed white spruce and aspen were partially cut in 1953-55 and scarified, leaving treatments that retained from 14 to 100 percent of total stand basal area. This report describes the composition of the stands, based on measurements of 88 permanent sample plots before and after cutting and in 1992. Stand development is described in terms of mortality and growth of the residual stands (including advance growth), hardwood reproduction and softwood regeneration on undisturbed seedbeds, and softwood regeneration on scarified strips within the plots. Options for renewing mature mixedwood stands are also discussed.

Book Will Minor Spruce Components of Boreal Broadleaf Stands Replace Themselves After Clearcut Harvesting

Download or read book Will Minor Spruce Components of Boreal Broadleaf Stands Replace Themselves After Clearcut Harvesting written by R. D. Kabzems and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examined natural regeneration of white spruce (Picea glauca) in 13 broadleaf stands in two areas of northeastern British Columbia, 14-25 years after harvest. Spruce natural regeneration was present in 11 of the 13 stands. Fort Nelson stands had more uniform spruce distribution and higher stocking than Dawson Creek stands. Regression analyses indicated that mineral soil seedbeds and seed source location relative to the harvested stand were able to predict Dawson Creek spruce regeneration, with a large component of unexplained variation. Distribution of spruce regeneration was more variable in harvest-origin stands than spruce found in mature aspen-dominated stands of wildfire origin. Model simulations indicated that rotation lengths of at least 80-100 years would be required for post-harvest spruce natural regeneration to contribute 10-20% of stand merchantable volume at the next rotation.
