Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parson and People, or Incidents in the Every-Day Life of a Clergyman What is a Suburban Parish? It is almost easier to define what it is not, than what it is; but the words will convey different impressions to differ ent minds. One will dream of quiet country villages, such as still linger within sight and almost sound and smell of London; another will depict to himself streets of palatial houses grand carriages, and swarms of liveried footmen; another will think of a huge succession of small self-contained, or semi-detached villas, out of which hosts of business-men issue regularly at from half-past eight to half-past nine in the morn ing, two-thirds of these men being engaged In buttoning a glove as they leave their own doors, and by omnibuses, railways, broughams, hacks. Book The Old Time Parson Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Time Parson Classic Reprint written by P. H. Ditchfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old-Time Parson His book makes no pretension to be a complete T and regular history of the clerical office. Many volumes would be needed to record the lives, manners, and customs of the clergy. The writer has tried to paint a portrait of the parson at various stages of his career, to catch a glimpse of the Saxon and mediaval cleric, to see the bishop in his palace, to show what kind of cleric ruled in Elizabethan and later times, to picture him in his pulpit and among his flock, in his sufferings and in his successes, and to discover what other men have written about him. It is a companion portrait to that of T be Paris/z Clerk, who won much favour last year in the eyes of many readers; and if the latter had his picture painted, it is only fair that the occupant of the higher tier of the three-decker should share his honour. We venture to hope that the admirers of the clerk will consent to raise their eyes to the parson, who always needs the sympathy and friendship of his fellows, and who by his good deeds, his patience under disappointment, his services to Church and State and to the few sheep in the wilder ness over whom he exercises his pastoral care, is perhaps not unworthy of their affection and regard. The writer desires to express his most grateful thanks to many correspondents who have kindly sent him anec. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parson Weems: A Biographical and Critical Study There needs no apology for writing as fully as the material available will allow the life of that American author whose works for the first half of the nineteenth century were more frequently reprinted and more widely distrib uted and read than those of any other native writer during the same period. Mason Locke Weems published his first pamphlet in 1792, and in I 800 he brought out his Life of Wash ington, his best known contribution to the lit erature of his period. From this date until the Civil War, his works were published and republished with a frequency that has a paral lel only in the many issues of the modern best sellers, a marked divergence, however, lying in the circumstance that in the case of the lat ter the necessity for republication generally dies with the same year that sees their first issue. The letter to Mr. Meagre said: The sacred oracles have long been dumb. Zion is languishing; our church is in debt, and our people scattered like sheep with out a shepherd. The ministers Of our Church around here say it is a shame we can't keep a minister longer. But no one ever stayed over two years since the time Of Old Mr. Huguenot. He built the church, you know; but he had so many funerals that bad winter, that he got the hemorrhage Of the lungs right in the pulpit, which our people didn't like in him, and so we thought we had better get a stronger man. Book A Country Parish Parsons

Download or read book A Country Parish Parsons written by Frank Samuel Child and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Country Parish Parsons: Ancient Parsons and Modern Incidents At a recent convention of Christian workers representing churches in city and country, the request was made that those who were born and bred in rural districts rise. The members stood upon their feet almost to a man. "It is evident," said the speaker, "that unless the country church is revived, our church will die out in the next generation." This book does not attempt to solve the problem of the country church. A loyal son whose ancestors long flourished in this parish has placed some exquisite jewel glass in the House of Worship - a commemoration of the first six ministers who served our people. This praiseworthy act has made occasion for the writer to adventure into the past and meet these old-time parsons and their friends in a social way. Download or read book The Recreations of a Country Parson Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recreations of a Country Parson Now, as a general rule, the Great Disposer says to the parson, Here is your home, here lies your work through life go and reconcile your mind to it, and do your best in it. No doubt there are men in the Church whose genius, popularity, influence, or luck is such, that they have a bewildering variety of' livings pressed upon them: but it is not so with ordinary folk and certainly it was not so with me. I went where Providence bade me go, which was not Where I had wished to go, and not where I had thought to go. Many who know me through the pages which make this and a preceding volume, have said, written, and printed, that I was specially cut out for a country parson, and specially adapted to relish a quiet country life. Not more, believe me, reader, than your self. It is in every man who sets himself to it to attain the self-same characteristics. It is quite true I have these now: but, a few years since, never was mortal less like them. No cockney set down near Sydney Smith at Fos ton-le-clay: no fish, suddenly Withdrawn from its native stream could feel more strange and cheerless than did I when I went to my beautiful country parish, where I have spent such happy days, and which I have come to love so much. Book The Graver Thoughts of a Country Parson

Download or read book The Graver Thoughts of a Country Parson written by Andrew Kennedy Hutchison Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Graver Thoughts of a Country Parson: Second Series There is a subdued, silvery light on the sea to-day, and the hills across the water look like blue clouds. The air is so still, that you may hear the beating of the paddles of a steamer miles distant, unseen in the veil of mist. There has been drizzling rain at intervals through the morning; and the road by the sea-side, yesterday ankle-deep in dust, is pleasantly firm and cool; and the trees, just beginning to be touched by the Atlantic breezes of the early days of September, look green again as in May, in the glints of silvery light from the clouded sun. You may see many fair scenes within the compass of Britain: but yesterday morning, when the sky was sapphire-blue, and the sunshine was the brightest; - when that expanse of sea shut in by noble hills was glassy smooth, and the yellow corn-fields round, bounded by green hedges, looked so still and rich in the quiet air, not without a touch of bracing crispness; you would have said that there could hardly be anything fairer in the world than this bit of the homely Clyde.
