Book excerpt: They were strangers in a seductive game of hide-and-seek. One by one, the women were disappearing. Each had been young, vulnerable...and each had been spending time on the Internet "chatting" with a mysterious stranger. It was Carrie Blue's job to track down that stranger, to put herself on the Internet in the guise of a lonely young student, and to smoke out a cunningly seductive killer. But soon Carrie is drawn inexorably into a world where truth is indistinguishable from fiction, where fantasy and reality collide. It proves far more difficult than she ever could have imagined to resist the lure of a twisted mind--one that may already have figured out who Carrie is, and marked her as his next kill.

Book The Return of King Arthur

Download or read book The Return of King Arthur written by Beverly Taylor and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1983 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revival of interest in Arthurian legend in the 19th century was a remarkable phenomenon, apparently at odds with the spirit of the age. Tennyson was widely criticised for his choice of a medieval topic; yet The Idylls of the Kingwere accepted as the national epic, and a flood of lesser works was inspired by them, on both sides of the Atlantic. Elisabeth Brewer and Beverly Taylor survey the course of Arthurian literature from 1800 to the present day, and give an account of all the major English and American contributions. Some of the works are well-known, but there are also a host of names which will be new to most readers, and some surprises, such as J. Comyns Carr's King Arthur, rightly ignored as a text, but a piece oftheatrical history, for Sir Henry Irving played King Arthur, Ellen Terry was Guinevere, Arthur Sullivan wrote the music, and Burne-Jones designed the sets. The Arthurian works of the Pre-Raphaelites are discussed at length, as are the poemsof Edward Arlington Robinson, John Masefield and Charles Williams. Other writers have used the legends as part of a wider cultural consciousness: The Waste Land, David Jones's In Parenthesis and The Anathemata, and the echoes ofTristan and Iseult in Finnigan's Wake are discussed in this context. Novels on Arthurian themes are given their due place, from the satirical scenes of Thomas Love Peacock's The Misfortunes of Elphin and Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court to T.H. White's serio-comic The Once and Future King and the many recent novelists who have turned away from the chivalric Arthur to depict him as a Dark Age ruler. The Return of King Arthurincludes a bibliography of British and American creative writing relating to the Arthurian legends from 1800 to the present day.

Book Shallow Graves

  • Author : Donna R. Love
  • Publisher : eBookIt.com
  • Release : 2013-02
  • ISBN : 1456607251
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Shallow Graves written by Donna R. Love and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shallow Graves is written by rock veteran and Texas music prophet Goat Carson. This is a madcap horror dramedy with a flavor all its own. Hip, provocative, and wickedly playful, "Shallow Graves" follows a world-weary horror movie researcher as he stumbles into powerful secrets of the occult and profound mysteries of mankind...but just wants to stay alive. Clever, satirical, and thrilling, "Shallow Graves" has vivid fun with the idea that destiny and salvation can belong to the most reluctant and unlikely heroes. Set in Hollywood and the Hamptons during the dead end of the 70's, Shallow Graves is a satirical retelling of the Parsival Legend. Our Holy Fool is the Professor, a half-breed orphan, who does research for horror films. He finds himself pitted against a cabal of satanic cults all vying for control of the clans at the great Feast of the Beast. Movie Stars, human sacrifice, East Hampton society and the living dead are strung together by thread of coincidence with needle sharp wit. The occult pulp fictions of our times are turned on their heads (the Spear of Destiny was stolen by Houdini at the turn of the century; Magdalene was black.) This dark satire on Hollywood, The DaVinci Code and The State of the Nation is a must read for all true fans of the bizarre.

Download or read book Queer Forster written by Robert K. Martin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-11-24 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume presents a radical revision of gay criticism and focuses on E. M. Forster's place in the emerging field of queer studies. Many previous critics of Forster downplayed his homosexuality or read Forster naively in terms of gay liberation. This collection situates Forster within the Bloomsbury Group and examines his relations to major figures such as Henry James, Edward Carpenter, and Virginia Woolf. Particular attention is paid to Forster's several accounts of India and their troubled relation to the British colonial enterprise. Analyzing a wide range of Forster's work, the authors examine material from Forster's undergraduate writings to stories written more than a half-century later. A landmark book for the study of gender in literature, Queer Forster brings the terms "queer" and "gay" into conversation, opening up a dialogue on wider dimensions of theory and allowing a major revaluation of modernist inventions of sexual identity.
