Book An Eventful Life

Download or read book An Eventful Life written by Will Parker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Eventful Life is a social history describing the life of a boy who maybe never grew up. The story begins in Will Parkers childhood as he accompanies his mother and father (one of the first travelling picture-show men) through central-western New South Wales, Australia, as they present silent films, films accompanied by vinyl soundtracks, and finally sound films on celluloid. An Eventful Life then follows Will through his teenage years working on sheep and cattle stations and in a city apprenticeship. He joins the Royal Australian Navy, is hospitalized for months with tuberculosis, and undergoes extensive artificial pneumothorax treatments. He then leaves Australia, joins the British Merchant Navy as an engineer, teaches in New Zealand, and finally returns to Sydney, where he marries and has a family. Will completes his high school education and obtains a science degree from the University of New South Wales. He teaches secondary school in Sydney, with a sojourn into management training. He and his wife fully sample small farming and the many facets of animal husbandry before he experiences his wifes gradual decline from Alzheimers/dementia and her hospitalization.

Book An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788

Download or read book An Archaeology of Australia Since 1788 written by Susan Lawrence and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an important new synthesis of archaeological work carried out in Australia on the post-contact period. It draws on dozens of case studies from a wide geographical and temporal span to explore the daily life of Australians in settings such as convict stations, goldfields, whalers' camps, farms, pastoral estates and urban neighbourhoods. The different conditions experienced by various groups of people are described in detail, including rich and poor, convicts and their superiors, Aboriginal people, women, children, and migrant groups. The social themes of gender, class, ethnicity, status and identity inform every chapter, demonstrating that these are vital parts of human experience, and cannot be separated from archaeologies of industry, urbanization and culture contact. The book engages with a wide range of contemporary discussions and debates within Australian history and the international discipline of historical archaeology. The colonization of Australia was part of the international expansion of European hegemony in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The material discussed here is thus fundamentally part of the global processes of colonization and the creation of settler societies, the industrial revolution, the development of mass consumer culture, and the emergence of national identities. Drawing out these themes and integrating them with the analysis of archaeological materials highlights the vital relevance of archaeology in modern society.

Book Blind Conscience

Download or read book Blind Conscience written by Margot O'Neill and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mandatory detention of asylum-seekers has been a prominent public issue for almost a decade. It has created an industry, provoked shame and anger across society, been manipulated politically by all sides and has prompted many to become actively involved in campaigns in support of asylum-seekers. The government's recent response to the crisis precipitated by the arrivial of the West Papuans and the widespread protest that followed show that the refugee crisis is not over. Nevertheless the prospects for incarcerated asylum-seekers have improved markedly since the intervention of Petro Georgeiou and other federal Liberal backbenchers. This shift and the time that has passed since the Tampa incident, children overboard and near saturation coverage of individual asylum-seekers provide the opportunity for some reflection. Margot O'Neill has covered many angles of the story herself, but writes now about the way Australian society at large was affected. She uses individuals - activists, psychiatrists, lawyers, politicians, prison guards - with direct experience to tell the broader story. This gives the book a strong narrative drive and a powerful emotional charge."--Provided by publisher.

Book The Routledge Companion to Urban Regeneration

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Urban Regeneration written by Michael E. Leary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, urban regeneration policy makers and practitioners have faced a number of difficult challenges, such as sustainability, budgetary constraints, demands for community involvement and rapid urbanization in the Global South. Urban regeneration remains a high profile and important field of government-led intervention, and policy and practice continue to adapt to the fresh challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, as well as confronting long standing intractable urban problems and dilemmas. This Companion provides cutting edge critical review and synthesis of recent conceptual, policy and practical developments within the field. With contributions from 70 international experts within the field, it explores the meaning of ‘urban regeneration’ in differing national contexts, asking questions and providing informed discussion and analyses to illuminate how an apparently disparate field of research, policy and practice can be rendered coherent, drawing out common themes and significant differences. The Companion is divided into six sections, exploring: globalization and neo-liberal perspectives on urban regeneration; emerging reconceptualizations of regeneration; public infrastructure and public space; housing and cosmopolitan communities; community centred regeneration; and culture-led regeneration. The concluding chapter considers the future of urban regeneration and proposes a nine-point research agenda. This Companion assembles a diversity of approaches and insights in one comprehensive volume to provide a state of the art review of the field. It is a valuable resource for both advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in Urban Planning, Built Environment, Urban Studies and Urban Regeneration, as well as academics, practitioners and politicians.

Book Sustainability and the Design of Transport Interchanges

Download or read book Sustainability and the Design of Transport Interchanges written by Brian Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-24 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interchange is a new form of transport building which integrates into a single whole various modes of public transport, putting the passenger first (rather than the infrastructure). This book presents design principles for transport interchanges and offers analysis of best practice in the UK and abroad. The author demonstrates how this complex new building type integrates with the city, on the one hand, and with different types of transport on the other. In this integration design in both plan and section are important, as is urban and landscape design. The idea of ‘interchange’ is increasingly relevant as town planners, engineers and architects address the question of sustainable development with its emphasis on energy efficiency, social cohesion, access for the elderly, and urban regeneration.
