Book The Indochinese Refugee Movement

Download or read book The Indochinese Refugee Movement written by Howard Adelman and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1979, a conference was organised in Canada on the Indochinese refugee movement, Canada's largest refugee programme. Papers were presented on four topics: 1) government policy 2) the international background 3) the Canadian community response 4) problems of adaptation in Canada. Government policy, i.e. the crucial decision permitting the inflow of refugees, was notable for the degree of support for refugees, any criticism that was made being of inadequate support. Regarding the international background, some papers discussed the role of UNHCR, while others concentrated on a political analysis of the action. The third section, on the Canadian community response, contained one positive paper describing the provincial support services available; the other three papers described negative reactions to refugees, with attempts to understand this "backlash". The final topic was the problems the refugees bring with them, and those they face in their adaptation to Canada. There were papers on employment and on education and health. The studies indicated that the experience of refugee groups is not fundamentally different from that of other immigrants.

Book Forced Migration in to Canada

Download or read book Forced Migration in to Canada written by Christina R. Clark-Kazak and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forced migration shaped the creation of Canada as a settler state and is a defining feature of our contemporary national and global contexts. Many people in Canada have direct or indirect experiences of refugee resettlement and protection, trafficking, and environmental displacement. Offering a comprehensive resource in the growing field of migration studies, Forced Migration in/to Canada is a critical primer from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Researchers, practitioners, and knowledge keepers draw on documentary evidence and analysis to foreground lived experiences of displacement and migration policies at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels. From the earliest instances of Indigenous displacement and settler colonialism, through Black enslavement, to statelessness, trafficking, and climate migration in today’s world, contributors show how migration, as a human phenomenon, is differentially shaped by intersecting identities and structures. Particularly novel are the specific insights into disability, race, class, social age, and gender identity. Situating Canada within broader international trends, norms, and structures – both today and historically – Forced Migration in/to Canada provides the tools we need to evaluate information we encounter in the news and from government officials, colleagues, and non-governmental organizations. It also proposes new areas for enquiry, discussion, research, advocacy, and action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011, over 5.6 million people have fled Syria and another 6.6 million remain internally displaced. By January 2017, a total of 40,081 Syrians had sought refuge across Canada in the largest resettlement event the country has experienced since the Indochina refugee crisis. Breaking new ground in an effort to understand and learn from the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative that Canada launched in 2015, A National Project examines the experiences of refugees, receiving communities, and a range of stakeholders who were involved in their resettlement, including sponsors, service providers, and various local and municipal agencies. The contributors, who represent a wide spectrum of disciplines, include many of Canada's leading immigration scholars and others who worked directly with refugees. Considering the policy behind the program and the geographic and demographic factors affecting it, chapters document mobilization efforts, ethical concerns, integration challenges, and varying responses to resettling Syrian refugees from coast to coast. Articulating key lessons to be learned from Canada's program, this book provides promising strategies for future events of this kind. Showcasing innovative practices and initiatives, A National Project captures a diverse range of experiences surrounding Syrian refugee resettlement in Canada.

Book Immigration Des Enfants

Download or read book Immigration Des Enfants written by G. A. Hersak and published by Emploi et immigration Canada, Elaboration de la politique. This book was released on 1987 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standing Committee on Labour, Employment and Immigration has raised concerns about the age structure of the Canadian population and has recommended the use of immigration policy to smooth out the age imbalance, with the immigration of children being a major policy solution. This document studies Canadian decline in fertility and ramifications of an aging population. It reviews past trends of child immigration and the international environment for future intakes of immigrant children with an analysis of sources of immigrant children in recent years, and global and world area population and age trends. It studies the immigration program components offering potential for more children through the independent category, the family class and refugees and the designated classes and makes related recommendations.
