La stessa lingua con cui questa storia così fondamentale si racconta appare presa in prestito: dalla storia dell’arte come dalla sociologia, dal romanzo come dalla giurisprudenza. Quella che si dichiara essere la testimonianza per eccellenza non fa spesso i conti neanche con il significato della stessa parola «testimonianza». Questo libro cerca di restituire al rapporto tra architettura e storia la complessità che esso conserva, nonostante tutti i tentativi di incasellarlo in tipi o categorie formali e sociali. Lo fa indagando le relazioni che l’architettura costruisce e muta nel tempo con la religione, la tecnica, il diritto, la rappresentazione dell’autorità, i sentimenti quotidiani attraversati da mutamenti, a volte drammatici a volte celebrativi. Lo fa scegliendo, per ogni capitolo, una parola chiave o piuttosto un’architettura che aiutino a capire come quelle parole, di cui noi spesso abusiamo, costruiscano relazioni tutt’altro che rassicuranti tra le parole e le cose. Con una scelta quasi scontata, per l’impostazione di un libro così: restituire al lettore il punto di osservazione che chi scrive si è costruito, perché sia più chiaro, e al tempo stesso più discutibile, il suo esercizio di storico.
