Book Udder health and communication

Download or read book Udder health and communication written by H. Hogeveen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In dairy industries throughout the world there is a desire to optimize udder health. An improved udder health will lead to improved animal welfare, improved production efficiency and a reduction of the use of antibiotics. To improve udder health, first of all, technical knowledge on issues such as treatment, milking, infectious pressure and host resistance is important. However, over the years we learned that knowledge alone is not enough: knowledge has to be used. And for knowledge to be used, farmers have to be motivated. This requires knowledge about motivation and communication. In this book, recent knowledge on technical udder health issues is combined with knowledge on motivation and communication. A large number of descriptions of mastitis control programs that are being carried out worldwide is combined with more specific studies. These are aimed at effective advising, motivation and communication strategies, economics, and technical studies on mastitis control and prevention. Therefore, this book provides an applied source of information for all that are willing to improve udder health.

Book Precision Dairy Farming 2016

Download or read book Precision Dairy Farming 2016 written by Claudia Kamphuis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supply of new innovative precision dairy farming technologies is steadily increasing. It aims to help farmers to be more labour efficient and to support them in their daily management decisions. At the same time, since many technologies are developed from an engineering perspective, adoption of these technologies is sometimes limited since knowledge on economic benefits and farmers' needs is often incomplete. This book covers the current status of precision dairy farming technologies and what farmers expect from them. It also includes insights and future perspectives on managing, analysing, and combining sensor information. Moreover, new innovative ideas that may better fit farmers' needs and expectation are introduced, ranging from technologies or innovations that aim at improved animal health and welfare, to those technologies that result in a more efficient use of feed and improved grazing management. This book is unique because science and engineering are combined to develop precision dairy farming technologies that are to be applied in practice. The book will serve as a stepping stone for new and innovative ideas within this rapidly growing area within dairy farming.

Book Optimization of Milking Management with Special Consideration of Milking Routine Machine Settings and Diagnostic Techniques

Download or read book Optimization of Milking Management with Special Consideration of Milking Routine Machine Settings and Diagnostic Techniques written by Matthias Josef Wieland and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of machine milking is to harvest high quality milk from cows as gently, quickly, and completely as possible. Gentleness implies that the impact on teat canal, teat tissue, and teat skin must be minimized. Milking speed can be measured in several ways including milking unit-on time of individual milking observations or parlor performance. Parlor performance indicators include the number of cows milked per hour or the amount of milk harvested per stall per hour. To optimize both measures of milking speed, the time that the teat cup is attached to the cow's teat should be kept as short as possible. The term completely describes the attempt to minimize the amount of milk that remains in the mammary gland after milking.Advancements in milking machine technologies and research enhancing our understanding of the physiological requirements of the cow over the last decades have led to optimization of the milk harvesting process. However, it is unclear which milking strategies have the potential to optimize teat tissue condition while enhancing milking performance in high-producing dairy cows with a thrice-daily milking schedule. In addition, we are lacking diagnostic techniques to reliably assess machine milking-induced changes in teat blood circulation. Such knowledge could further the understanding of how the blood circulation is affected by current machine milking practices and how they are related to the susceptibility to intramammary infection and milking performance. The objectives therefore were to (1) investigate the effect of 2 different premilking stimulation regimens on milking performance and teat tissue condition, (2) study the effect of 2 different automatic cluster remover settings on milking performance, teat tissue condition, and udder health, and (3) develop, evaluate, and employ a diagnostic technique using power Doppler ultrasonography to assess changes in teat blood flow that are associated with premilking stimulation and machine milking. Cows that were forestripped during premilking udder preparation had shorter milking unit-on time and spent less time below 1 kg/min milk flow rate to harvest the same amount of milk per milking session. The odds of machine milking-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue were lower for cows that received forestripping compared with cows that were not forestripped. Increasing the automatic cluster remover settings from 0.8 to 1.2 kg/min decreased individual milking duration and alleviated milking-machine-induced short-term changes to the teat tissue condition without adversely affecting the amount of milk harvested, milk component yields, or udder health. No meaningful differences were detected in machine-milking-induced long-term changes between treatment groups. Power Doppler ultrasonography was shown to be a suitable tool to quantify teat blood circulation in dairy cows. Teat blood flow, as assessed with power Doppler ultrasonography was associated with premilking teat stimulation and machine milking. Overall, optimization of milking routine and machine settings by means of premilking udder stimulation and modification of machine settings enhanced milking efficiency and improved teat tissue condition of dairy cows without adversely affecting their milk production or udder health indicators. Application of power Doppler ultrasonography can further our understanding of the circulatory system of dairy cows' teats including inherent circulatory regulation mechanisms and extrinsic factors such as machine milking.

Book Impact of Dry off Management in Automatic Milking Systems on Dairy Cow Udder Health and Production

Download or read book Impact of Dry off Management in Automatic Milking Systems on Dairy Cow Udder Health and Production written by Ariane France and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of my thesis was to determine how milk yield at dry-off in AMS-milked cows, as affected by milking frequency and feed supplement allocation in the AMS, impacted udder health over the dry period, and how those factors might also affect milk production and cow behaviour before dry-off and in the next lactation. Using a combined strategy of reducing AMS milking permissions to 1x/d and reducing AMS feed allocation to 0.75 kg/d in the 14-8 d before dry-off and then 0.5 kg/d for the 8-0d before dry-off can be used to decrease milk yield, without negatively impacting future health and productivity. There is an elevated risk for new quarter-level subclinical IMI post-calving in 3+ lactation cows, which produce between 15-22 kg/d before dry-off, compared to those below and above this range, and for those cows with decreased AMS feed allocation before dry-off compared to those with no decreased AMS feed allocation.

Book Herd Health and Production Management in Dairy Practice

Download or read book Herd Health and Production Management in Dairy Practice written by Arie Brand and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text aims to teach students, practitioners and farm advisors how to give management support to the dairy farmer in order to optimize the health, productivity and welfare of his herd. The book covers management practices and farm conditions which have both positive and negative influences on these aspects, rather than a more traditional focus on specific diseases. The core element in this methodology is the protocol. In order to illustrate the standard protocol the practitioner and farm advisor are taken through a farm visit, during which operational and problem-solving issues are addressed. These issues include: nutrition; health care; reproduction; milk production; replacement rearing; and farm economics.
