It argues that although many parliaments are elected under flawed or non-competitive elections, autocratic governments are nevertheless aware of the need to appear representative and accessible to the demands of citizens and that even limited parliaments manage to represent their voters, sometimes in ways not intended by the regime. The book examines how elites structure, manage and organize representation; how they foster the desired kind of representation; and how they limit the ways in which parliaments fulfil their representative functions. The book concludes that Kazakhstan is a more hegemonic form of autocracy and the Kyrgyz Republic a more competitive form and that the degree to which parliaments fulfil their representational functions and how much room for manoeuvre individual MPs have depends largely on how much parties control candidate selection and the daily schedule and administrative resources of parliaments.

The states here continue to undergo complex nation-building process, which is far from complete, but they firmly remain insulated by Russia and but more increasingly so by China. Only Kyrgyzstan has so far uniquely followed a liberal polity, but this young country had to cope with two revolutions before achieving a parliamentary democracy in 2010. However, the institution of democracy remains weak because of some difficult and intricate internal and external challenges i.e., economic, ethnic, Islamic, narcotic along with convoluted strategic games played by major powers in Kyrgyzstan. It is the only country in the world that hosts military bases of both Russia and the United States. The country retains strong Chinese economic influence. The book is an attempt to provide an overview of political and strategic processes at work in the region by taking the case of Kyrgyzstan, tracing the events erupted since 2005 and more after 2010. It contains aspects of India's engagement in Kyrgyzstan and throws light on India's newly launched 'Connect Central Asia' policy.

Joshi provides scholars and students with an in-depth examination of representation of women in contemporary Asian politics. Whereas most studies have focused on descriptive representation and substantive representation, Joshi offers a more nuanced theoretical framework for understanding the impact of women on Asian politics and vice versa. He does so by presenting an original, integrated framework for studying gendered political representation applicable to any country, institution, or organization. This framework captures four generations of advances in the study of women's political representation: critical presence (descriptive and symbolic representation), critical diversity/intersectionality (diverse representation), critical mass and critical actors (substantive representation), and critical duration (sustainable representation). Drawing from a large dataset on the demographic characteristics of over 18,000 female and male members from 38 parliaments across Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, and West Asia, he is able to address both why only some women enter parliament as well as why some women have more influence than others after entering. Important aspects of Asian parliamentary representation addressed in this book that have thus far been under-researched include: Why do some women stay in politics longer than others? Under what contexts do we see women holding cabinet positions and chairing parliamentary committees? Are women from all educational, occupational, age-cohort/generational, ethnic/religious, and marital status backgrounds included? Recognizing that descriptive and substantive representations include both quantitative and qualitative components, Women in Asiamakes an important contribution vis-à-vis previous work on women's representation in Asian politics both conceptually and empirically. Mongolia has often been deemed an “island of democracy,” commended for its rapid adoption of free democratic elections in the wake of totalitarian socialism. The democratizing era, however, brought alongside it a phenomenon that Manduhai Buyandelger terms “electionization”—a restructuring of elections from time-grounded events into a continuous neoliberal force that governs everyday life beyond the electoral period. In this way, electoral campaigns have come to substitute for the functions of governing, from social welfare to the private sector, requiring an accumulation of wealth and power beyond the reach of most women candidates. In A Thousand Steps to Parliament, Buyandelger shows how successful women candidates instead use strategies of self-polishing to cultivate charisma and a reputation for being oyunlag, or intellectful. This carefully crafted identity can be called the “electable self”: treating their bodies and minds as pliable and renewable, women candidates draw from the same practices of neoliberalism that have unsustainably commercialized elections.
