Book The Parliamentary History of the Irish Land Question From 1829 to 1869

Download or read book The Parliamentary History of the Irish Land Question From 1829 to 1869 written by R. Barry O'brien and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parliamentary History of the Irish Land Question, From 1829 to 1869: And the Origin and Results of the Ulster Custom In the following pages I have endeavoured to trace, from authentic sources, the parliamentary history of the Irish Land Question. That question has a history apart from and reaching far beyond the limits prescribed in my text; but with this more extended area of events I do not deal, contenting myself with a concise narrative of legislative efforts, and facts and circumstances connected with them, from 1829 to 1870. I have throughout preferred to let others speak rather than to speak myself. The names of the men to whose utterances I invite attention are well known wherever the English tongue is spoken. My object has been not to enforce opinions or advance theories of my own, but by this collection and array of evidence to lay before the public materials on which they may, perhaps, be enabled to arrive at sound conclusions on the Irish Land Question. Book The Irish Land Question

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Land Question: Scheme for a Peasant Proprietary in Ireland My proposals, it will be seen, suggest a simple but constitu tional plan - new at the time in Britain, but since taken up and more or less seriously considered - for dealing with the land troubles of Ireland, and likely to relieve the country at once of agitation and distress. The plan is based on the mode of settlement known to be adopted in the early history of the colonies, and which, on repeated occasions, was advantageously acted upon at one period in the history of Canada; At the time. My paper was published, the Imperial Government of the day was about to submit a measure to Parliament dealing with the Land Question, which, it was confidently aflirmed, would solve this, the most interesting and important of questions affecting. The United Kingdom and its dependencies. Not only this, but other remedial measures, have been passed in Parliament without successfully curing the evils Ireland has long com plained of, or, in any appreciable degree, pacifying the people. Year by year matters have become worse 3 and the longer the true remedy is withheld the more bitter will be the feeling of the Irish people, and the more surely will disloyalty and trea son raise their heads.
