Book Parity Nonconservation in Atomic Phenomena

Download or read book Parity Nonconservation in Atomic Phenomena written by Khriplovich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-11-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Khriplovich (physics, Novosibirsk U., USSR) describes his own work and that of others in demonstrating the first decisive confirmations of the unified model of atomic electroweak interactions. The studies of weak interaction by optical methods, at the boundary between elementary particle physics and atomic spectroscopy, have revealed parity nonconservation in atomic transitions. He considers the effects of space-inversion and time-reversal violations in atoms, molecules, and condensed matter. First published in Russian in 1981, and translated from the 1988 second edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role have experiments played, and should they play, in physics? How does one come to believe rationally in experimental results? The Neglect of Experiment attempts to provide answers to both of these questions. Professor Franklin's approach combines the detailed study of four episodes in the history of twentieth century physics with an examination of some of the philosophical issues involved. The episodes are the discovery of parity nonconservation ( or the violation of mirror symmetry) in the 1950s; the nondiscovery of parity nonconservation in the 1930s, when the results of experiments indicated, at least in retrospect, the symmetry violation, but the significance of those results was not realized; the discovery and acceptance of CP ( combined parity-charge conjugations, paricle-antiparticle) symmetry; and Millikan's oil-drop experiment. Franklin examines the various roles that experiment plays, including its role in deciding between competing theories, confirming theories, and calling fo new theories. The author argues that one can provide a philosophical justification for these roles. He contends that if experiment plays such important roles, then one must have good reason to believe in experimental results. He then deals with deveral problems concerning such reslults, including the epistemology of experiment, how one comes to believe rationally in experimental results, the question of the influence of theoretical presuppositions on results, and the problem of scientific fruad. This original and important contribution to the study of the philosophy of experimental science is an outgrowth of many years of research. Franklin brings to this work more than a decade of experience as an experimental high-energy physicist, along with his significant contributions to the history and philosophy of science.

Book Energy And Mass In Relativity Theory

Download or read book Energy And Mass In Relativity Theory written by Lev Borisovich Okun and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy and Mass in Relativity Theory presents about 30 pedagogical papers published by the author over the last 20 years. They deal with concepts central to relativity theory: energy E, rest energy E0, momentum p, mass m, velocity v of particles of matter, including massless photons for which v = c. Other related subjects are also discussed.According to Einstein's equation E0= mc2, a massive particle at rest contains rest energy which is partly liberated in the nuclear reactions in the stars and the Sun, as well as in nuclear reactors and bombs on the Earth. The mass entering Einstein's equation does not depend on velocity of a body. This concept of mass is used in the physics of elementary particles and is gradually prevailing in the modern physics textbooks. This is the first book in which Einstein's equation is explicitly compared with its popular though not correct counterpart E = mc2, according to which mass increases with velocity. The book will be of interest to researchers in theoretical, atomic and nuclear physics, to historians of science as well as to students and teachers interested in relativity theory.

Book Experiment Right Or Wrong

    Book Details:
  • Author : Allan Franklin
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1990-05-25
  • ISBN : 9780521382076
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Experiment Right Or Wrong written by Allan Franklin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-05-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Experiment, Right or Wrong, Allan Franklin continues his investigation of the history and philosophy of experiment presented in his previous book, The Neglect of Experiment. In this new study, Franklin considers the fallibility and corrigibility of experimental results and presents detailed histories of two such episodes: 1) the experiment and the development of the theory of weak interactions from Fermi's theory in 1934 to the V-A theory of 1957 and 2) atomic parity violation experiments and the Weinberg-Salam unified theory of electroweak interactions of the 1970s and 1980s. In these episodes Franklin demonstrates not only that experimental results can be wrong, but also that theoretical calculations and the comparison between experiment and theory can also be incorrect. In the second episode, Franklin contrasts his view of an "evidence model" of science in which questions of theory choice, confirmation, and refutation are decided on the basis of reliable experimental evidence, with that proposed by the social constructivists.

Book Selected Papers 1945 1980 with Commentary

Download or read book Selected Papers 1945 1980 with Commentary written by Chen Ning Yang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable personal and professional chronicle by one of today's leading physicists, this is a collection of Chen Ning Yang's personally selected papers supplemented by his insightful commentaries. Including previously unpublished or hard-to-find works, this volume contains Yang's important papers on statistical physics, nuclear forces, and particle physics. Among them are his seminal work with T D Lee on the nonconservation of parity, for which they won the Nobel Prize, and his work with R L Mills, which led to modern gauge theories with their exciting prospects for the broad unification of field theories. The commentaries were written especially for this volume and provide a fascinating account of Yang's development as a physicist as well as a look at many important physicists of the 20th century. They trace the development of Yang's interests and ideas from his graduate school days to the present, showing how he worked with his colleagues and how their physics came into being.Together, the papers and commentaries in this unique collection comprise a powerful personal statement, shedding light on both the intellectual development of a great physicist and on the nature of scientific inquiry.
