Book ANNA KARENINA Two Unabridged Translations in One Premium Edition World Classics Series

Download or read book ANNA KARENINA Two Unabridged Translations in One Premium Edition World Classics Series written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 2122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "ANNA KARENINA – Two Unabridged Translations in One Premium Edition (World Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Anna Karenina is the story of a married aristocrat/socialite and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story opens when she arrives in the midst of a family broken up by her brother's unbridled womanizing—something that prefigures her own later situation, though she would experience less tolerance by others. A bachelor, Vronsky is eager to marry her if she will agree to leave her husband Karenin, a senior government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, the moral laws of the Russian Orthodox Church, her own insecurities, and Karenin's indecision. Although Vronsky and Anna go to Italy, where they can be together, they have trouble making friends. Back in Russia, she is shunned, becoming further isolated and anxious, while Vronsky pursues his social life... Widely considered a pinnacle in realist fiction, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first real novel and Dostoevsky declared it to be "flawless as a work of art".His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style", and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written". About the Maude translation: the translation by Aylmer Maude and Louise Shanks Maude is highly considered by scholars. This unabridged translation from the original Russian was originally published in 1918.The Maudes were classical translators of Leo Tolstoy who worked directly with the author and gained his personal endorsement. About the Garnett translation: Constance Garnett's translation of Anna Karenina is still among the best. Some scholars feel that her language is closer to the 19th-century sense of the original. Garnett translated seventy volumes of Russian prose for publication, including all of Dostoyevsky's novels.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Paris: French Character SketchesAdam made no apologies for being; neither does my book. Every man sees Paris differently; mine was the Paris of a stranger, - a young man; time, Exposition year; and my business was to indite letters to the Spn'ngfield Republican and Boston T ranscm'pt. The widg popularity given to the correspondence through the medium of those excellent journals was as unexpected as generous opportunities for the study of certain phases of Paris life were never better than in 1867, and the numerous demands for a resume, in substantial form, of a year's experience in the French capi tal, have prompted this volume of character sketches.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Kiki Man Ray Art Love and Rivalry in 1920s Paris

Download or read book Kiki Man Ray Art Love and Rivalry in 1920s Paris written by Mark Braude and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling portrait of Paris’s forgotten artist and cabaret star, whose incandescent life asks us to see the history of modern art in new ways. In freewheeling 1920s Paris, Kiki de Montparnasse captivated as a nightclub performer, sold out gallery showings of her paintings, starred in Surrealist films, and shared drinks and ideas with the likes of Jean Cocteau and Marcel Duchamp. Her best-selling memoir—featuring an introduction by Ernest Hemingway—made front-page news in France and was immediately banned in America. All before she turned thirty. Kiki was once the symbol of bohemian Paris. But if she is remembered today, it is only for posing for several now-celebrated male artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Alexander Calder, and especially photographer Man Ray. Why has Man Ray’s legacy endured while Kiki has become a footnote? Kiki and Man Ray met in 1921 during a chance encounter at a café. What followed was an explosive decade-long connection, both professional and romantic, during which the couple grew and experimented as artists, competed for fame, and created many of the shocking images that cemented Man Ray’s reputation as one of the great artists of the modern era. The works they made together, including the Surrealist icons Le Violon d’Ingres and Noire et blanche, now set records at auction. Charting their volatile relationship, award-winning historian Mark Braude illuminates for the first time Kiki’s seminal influence not only on Man Ray’s art, but on the culture of 1920s Paris and beyond. As provocative and magnetically irresistible as Kiki herself, Kiki Man Ray is the story of an exceptional life that will challenge ideas about artists and muses—and the lines separating the two.
