This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Parisian Pastor's Glance at America The political and social institutions of America, its material prosperity, and the manners of the people, have been frequently described by transatlantic travellers. But there is one phase of American society, by no means its least important or least characteristic, which has been hitherto comparatively neglected, especially by French writers, and has scarcely ever been pre sented in its true and proper light. I mean, its moral, religious and ecclesiastical aspect. Though the principles on which it is founded do not command, in France at least, the sympathies of the multitude, it was naturally enough this phase of American character which chiefly attracted the regards of the distin guished divine, to whose pen we are indebted for the unpre tending but very interesting remarks here offered in an English garb. Book Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents 4 volumes

Download or read book Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents 4 volumes written by Randall M. Miller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 1208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this book, students, teachers, and general readers get a most important look at primary documents—essentially history's "first draft"—revealing rare insights into how American life in past eras really was, and also about how professional historians begin their work. Daily Life through American History in Primary Documents presents a large sweep of American history through the voices of the American people themselves. This multivolume work explores the daily lives of American people from colonial times to the present through primary documents that include diaries, letters, memoirs, speeches, sermons, pamphlets, and all manner of public and private writings from "the people." The emphasis is on the variety of people's experiences as they ordered and lived their daily lives. The cast includes Americans of every class and condition, men and women, parents and children, free and "unfree," native-born and immigrant. Hundreds of images further illustrate American life as it developed over more than four centuries and as Americans moved across a continent. Organized both chronologically and topically, this collection invites many uses by students, teachers, librarians, and anyone wanting to discover what counted in American lives at any one time and over time. Its focus on primary documents encourages readers of the volume to explore specific and critical events by taking a firsthand look at the actual documents from which those events draw historical meaning. The documents show Americans at work, at home, at play, in the public square, in places of worship, and on the move. As such, they perfectly complement the acclaimed Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life in America and will enrich any American history, social science, and sociology classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States was the first major colony to revolt successfully against colonial rule. In this sense, it was the first "new nation." To see how, in the course of American history, its values took shape in institutions may help us to understand some of the problems faced by the new nations emerging today on the world scene. In The First New Nation, two broad themes occupy Seymour Martin Lipset's attention: the social conditions that make a stable democracy possible, and the extent to which the American experience was representative or exceptional. The volume is divided into three parts, each of which deals with the role of values in a nation's evolution, but each approaches this role from a different perspective. Part 1, "America as a New Nation," compares early America with today's emerging nations to discover problems common to them as new nations, and analyzes some of the consequences of a revolutionary birth for the creation of a national character and style. Part 2, "Stability in the Midst of Change," traces how values derived from America's revolutionary origins have continued to influence the form and substance of American institutions. Lipset concentrates on American history in later periods, selecting for discussion as critical cases religious institutions and trade unions. Part 3, "Democracy in Comparative Perspective," attempts to show by comparative analysis some ways through which a nation's values determine its political evolution. It compares political development in several modern industrialized democracies, including the United States, touching upon value patterns, value differences, party systems, and the bases of social cleavage.
