Book Comparative Social Administration

Download or read book Comparative Social Administration written by John Greve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first work that systematically applies the comparative method to the study of social policy and administration. After a full discussion of this approach in the introduction, the book offers three authoritative national studies--France, Norway, Canada--each giving a rounded picture of social policy and administration in the particular country. Social needs, resources, and forms of social administration are related to the most significant social, demographic, economic, and political factors of the area in question. The authors trace the development of social policies and indicate the direction these policies are likely to take in the future. Comparisons between problems and solutions in all three countries, as well as in Great Britain and the United States, are made throughout.Part II contains comparative analyses of particular problems and of the different forms of social administration designed to deal with them. The problem approach is applied to five areas of social administration: social policy and social planning, social security, coordination, social policies and care for the aged and family policies. Examples are taken not only from the countries previously under study, but also from other Western nations with well-developed social service systems. A concluding chapter delineates the benefits of the comparative method as demonstrated in this volume, and outlines how the goals set forth in the introduction have been fulfilled. This unique and fascinating book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, especially those concerned with the study, the making, or the implementation and administration of social policy. It will serve as a stimulus for fresh interpretation and the re-evaluation of major social institutions here and abroad.

Book State Power Stigmatization and Youth Resistance Culture in the French Banlieues

Download or read book State Power Stigmatization and Youth Resistance Culture in the French Banlieues written by Hervé Anderson Tchumkam and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State Power, Stigmatization, and Youth Resistance Culture in the French Banlieues: Uncanny Citizenship foregrounds the literary, sociological, and political structures of urban literature in France. It uses postcolonial theory, sociology, and political philosophy to investigate the modalities surrounding the question of citizenship in a country where citizens of African descent are not only considered a threat to national identity, but also caught between inclusion and exclusion. By examining the literary, sociological, and political structures of urban literatures produced after the 2005 riots, this book interrogates the questions of citizenship, belonging, and coexistence in a context where literature from the "periphery" has become a site where "central" political power and "mainstream" French literary canons are contested. Moreover, these productions clearly reveal an unexplored correlation between geo-aesthetics and contemporary French national geopolitics. Ultimately, this book is a plea for a serious approach to social formation in postcolonial France in a way that transcends skin color, and instead is based on a shared colonial past, as well as current social disqualifications.

Book Rape Cultures and Survivors

Download or read book Rape Cultures and Survivors written by Tuba Inal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth treatment in two volumes of the historical and cultural contexts of rape and rape culture, this set discusses both victims and perpetrators internationally during war and peace times and examines the treatment of survivors. Historically, women, men, and children have all suffered sexual violence, during wartime and peacetime as well as inside and outside their homes. This two-volume title focuses on survivors of rape in a variety of social and cultural contexts. It examines different people who are victimized in a variety of situations (including in war and prisons) and studies the particularities of "rape cultures" that are intertwined with ethnic cultures and hatreds and other forms of conflictual social, political, and economic relations. In the introduction, the editors define rape and rape culture and provide historical and cultural context for the information presented throughout the volumes, the first of which primarily focuses on the causes and manifestations of rape cultures; the second considers the consequences of rape cultures for survivors of sexual assault. In both volumes, contributors provide case studies elucidating the experiences of a variety of victims—young, old, male, female, straight, and LGBT—in diverse locations around the world to help readers understand how truly pervasive and portentous rape culture is.

Book Principles of French Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Bell
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2008-03-27
  • ISBN : 0191018899
  • Pages : 616 pages

Download or read book Principles of French Law written by John Bell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-03-27 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of French Law offers a comprehensive introduction to French law and the French legal system in terms which a common lawyer can understand. The authors give an explanation of the institutions, rules and techniques that characterize the major branches of French law. The chapters provide the reader with a clear sense of the questions that French lawyers see as important and how they would answer them. In the ten years since the publication of the first edition, French law has changed in significant ways. European Union law and the European Convention on Human Rights have had a significant impact, especially on procedural law and family law. There has been a new Commercial Code, major legislation on divorce, succession and criminal law, as well as significant developments in the Constitution. In addition, there have been considerable developments in the case-law and a much discussed proposal for reform of major areas of the law of obligations. The chapters present not only the rules of law, but, where appropriate, the principles and values underlying the system. Considerable use is made of juristic literature and of examples from French case law. The book is designed for students studying French law at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and as preliminary reading for students about to study in France. It will also serve as an initial point of reference for scholars embarking on a study of French law.

Book Abuse or Punishment

Download or read book Abuse or Punishment written by Marie-Aimée Cliche and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time, the use of corporal punishment by parents in child-rearing was considered normal, but in the second half of the nineteenth century this begin to change, in Quebec as well as the rest of the Western world. It was during this period that the extent of ill-treatment inflicted on children—treatment once excused as good child-rearing practice—was discovered. This book analyzes both the advice provided to parents and the different forms of child abuse within families. Cliche derives her information from family magazines, reports and advice columns in newspapers, people’s life stories, the records of the Montreal Juvenile Court, and even comic strips. Two dates are given particular focus: 1920, with the trial of the parents of Aurore Gagnon, which sensitized the public to the phenomenon of “child martyrs;” and 1940, with the advent of the New Education movement, which was based on psychology rather than strict discipline and religious doctrine. There has always been child abuse. What has changed is society’s sensitivity to it. That is why defenders of children’s rights call for the repeal of Section 43 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which authorizes “reasonable” corporal punishment. Abuse or Punishment? considers not only the history of violence towards children in Quebec but the history of public perception of this violence and what it means for the rest of Canada.

Book excerpt: The author talks about the testimony of two boys who successively lost their parents during the massacres in the Republic Democratic of Congo, DRC (former Mobutu’s Zaire). The older is an eleven-year-old boy and his little brother is four. I have been orphaned for four years. Upon their return to Rwanda from exile, they had to flee again from their village where their lands and houses have been seized by new settlers who accused them as Genocide perpetrators. They have to live in the street with other kids they consider their brothers and sisters. In his own words, the elder boy says: “I have never had much opportunity in life. You will be able to guess why later. I am a street kid, a mayibobo in my native language. My address, as well as my cell phone number—because everyone needs a cell phone number—is zero, definitely zero. I spend my nights under the bridges of Kigali or under the canopy of high-rises when the police aren’t mean and chase me away. I live perched like a bird! My street companions aren’t friends in the sense that I would share my food with them, but they are my comrades. We were fleeing Death without realizing that he moved with us or behind us, dressed in denim pants, plastic boots, and kepis and speaking Kinyarwanda, Swahili, or English. These soldiers were so cruel! Instead of attacking the people who had the strength to run away, they usually started with the weak who lagged behind. This would include pregnant mothers, children separated from their parents, the old, and the sick.”

Book Rwanda Blood Everywhere and Beyond

Download or read book Rwanda Blood Everywhere and Beyond written by Emmanuel Ngiruwonsanga and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rwanda, this small country located in the center of Africa, was filled with human blood in 1994. Extremist Rwandans killed about 1 million people in only one hundred days, about 3 million fled Rwanda into exile in Democratic Republic of Congo ( ex-Zaire) where they would be killed by the Rwandan Patriotic Army from 1996 until 1998. This book is about a testimony of two boys who survived these massacres in which they had lost both their parents who were killed in the forests of the Congo. The older boy, 7 years old at that time, had to take care of his little brother, a newborn whose mother was killed only a couple hours after his birth. Miraculously, they both traveled the entire country of the Congo and came back to Rwanda. Once in their home country of Rwanda, in their own home village, the neighbours, who wanted to keep their inheritance, accused them of committing genocide in 1994. But at the time of this heinous crime, the older brother was only 5 years old, and his little brother was not born yet. To survive the attacks, harassment, and terror of these neighbours, ancient refugees from Uganda, they became "street kids" where I met them.
