Book Parenting Effects on Self Efficacy and Self Esteem in Late Adolescence and How Those Factors Impact Adjustment to College

Download or read book Parenting Effects on Self Efficacy and Self Esteem in Late Adolescence and How Those Factors Impact Adjustment to College written by Gregory J. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately three months before starting college, 203 high school seniors completed a questionnaire consisting of the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) assessing their parents' parenting styles. The PAQ yielded scores on three parenting styles originally proposed by Baumrind (1971): authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive. Two weeks after starting college the students completed a questionnaire consisting of the Dundee Relocation Inventory assessing degree of homesickness and the Tests of Reactions and Adaptations to College assessing adjustment to college. Authoritarian parents had students with lower self-esteem and self-efficacy, while authoritative parents had students with higher self-esteem and self-efficacy. There was no relationship between permissiveness in parents and the students' levels of self-esteem or self-efficacy. Students higher in self-esteem and self-efficacy experienced less homesickness and showed better emotional and behavioral adjustment to college. Conversely, students lower in self-esteem and self-efficacy experienced more homesickness and had a more difficult adjustment to college. (Contains 6 figures.).

Book The Impact of Different Parenting Styles on First Year College Students Adaptation to College

Download or read book The Impact of Different Parenting Styles on First Year College Students Adaptation to College written by Gregory J. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study was undertaken to determine the impact of different parenting styles on college students' adaptation to college. During the second week of college, 80 first-year students from two-parent families completed the Tests of Reactions and Adaptations to College, English version and the Parental Authority Questionnaire. Authoritative parenting was related to more positive characteristics in the students studied than either authoritarian or permissive parenting including having less anxiety, being more willing to seek help from peers and teachers, being better prepared for exams, and giving greater priority to their college studies. While permissive parenting was related to better emotional adjustment than authoritarian parenting, the behavioral and belief differences resulting from those two parenting styles were negligible. Comparing mothers and fathers, the fathers' parenting styles had a greater impact on the students than the mothers' parenting styles. The results of this research suggest that different parenting styles have impacted the development of students' individual dispositions and that those individual dispositions then impact on and are exhibited in the students' initial adjustment to college. Book Minimizing helicopter parents impact on college students mental health autonomy and self efficacy

Download or read book Minimizing helicopter parents impact on college students mental health autonomy and self efficacy written by Jacob Rozema and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopter parents have a considerable effect on the health and wellbeing of their college student children. By trying to hold on and take control of their children’s lives, helicopter parent’s children can be negatively impacted over the course of their lives. Overinvolved parenting has been shown to be associated with lower self-efficacy in young adult children. One of the consequences of parents attempting to solve all their children’s problems, and assuming responsibility for their children’s wellbeing far into adulthood, is that children fail to develop a strong belief in their own abilities to solve problems and achieve goals. As children grow up and become young adults entering college, they try to develop autonomy from their parents but may be inadvertently prevented from doing so by their helicopter parents. This project reports on studies that have shown that higher levels of helicopter parenting are associated with more symptoms of depression and lower self-efficacy which in turn, are associated with more symptoms of depression and lower self-efficacy which in turn, are associated with lower levels of academic and social adjustment to college. To lower the effect that helicopter parents have on their college aged children, this project proposal develops a program called Parent Intervention Targeting Student Transition and Helicopter Parenting (PITSTAHP), a session for parents at the end of orientation time. The session take them through an interactive discussion about the negative effects of helicopter parenting. PITSTAHP offers conversation starters and helpful tips so that parents can effectively communicate with their college-aged children while avoiding or interrupting the helicopter parenting role.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrant children and youth are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and so their prospects bear heavily on the well-being of the country. Children of Immigrants represents some of the very best and most extensive research efforts to date on the circumstances, health, and development of children in immigrant families and the delivery of health and social services to these children and their families. This book presents new, detailed analyses of more than a dozen existing datasets that constitute a large share of the national system for monitoring the health and well-being of the U.S. population. Prior to these new analyses, few of these datasets had been used to assess the circumstances of children in immigrant families. The analyses enormously expand the available knowledge about the physical and mental health status and risk behaviors, educational experiences and outcomes, and socioeconomic and demographic circumstances of first- and second-generation immigrant children, compared with children with U.S.-born parents.
