Book excerpt: For many students, the transition from high school to college is accompanied by a considerable amount of stress. Past research has examined factors that make this transition more or less stressful, and one area of focus has been the parent-child relationship. This study examined how parenting styles and practices predict a student's ability to adjust to college. First year college students (N=182) completed questionnaires that assessed parenting styles, parenting practices, adjustment to college, and drinking problems. Authoritative parenting predicted better adjustment and fewer alcohol problems. Homework involvement predicted better overall adjustment. Parenting practices were shown to play a mediating role between authoritative parenting and adjustment in some cases, and authoritative parenting moderated the relationship between parenting practices and drinking problems. Overall, these findings suggest that parenting continues to play an important role in students' lives during college, and further research is needed to better understand these interactions.

Book excerpt: The first year of college may be a salient time period for the development of drinking practices in college populations. While parenting styles have been associated with global self-regulation, resistance to peer influence and college student drinking behaviors, a comprehensive evaluation of these relationships has yet to be established. Researchers have demonstrated that self-regulation acts as both a predictor and moderator of resistance to peer influence, which has been shown to be a more proximal predictor of drinking behaviors. While relationships between global self-regulation, parenting, and drinking have been empirically established, less attention has been given to specific methods of selfregulation such as regulatory focus. Thus, the current study examined the relationships between parenting styles, two modes of regulatory focus (i.e., promotion and prevention focus), resistance to peer influence and drinking behaviors in first year college students. It was hypothesized that regulatory focus and resistance to peer influence would be partial mediators between parenting styles and drinking behaviors, such that parenting styles would predict regulatory focus, which would in turn predict resistance to peer influence; subsequently, peer influence would predict drinking behaviors. It was also hypothesized that each mode of regulatory focus would moderate the manner in which resistance to peer influence predicts drinking behaviors. Finally, given that researchers have also found race to be a common influential factor on all variables within the current study, racial differences across the aforementioned relationships were also examined. The current study sampled 323 college freshmen from a large southeastern college student population. A structural equation modeling approach was used to examine all variables of interest. Results indicated that promotion-focused self-regulation and resistance to peer influence sequentially mediated relationships between authoritative and permissive parenting styles and drinking behaviors. Prevention focused self-regulation was not associated with resistance to peer influence; thus, these constructs did not sequentially mediate relationships between parenting and drinking behaviors. Results also indicated that when resistance to peer influence mediated the relationship between a given parenting style and drinking behavior, it was also moderated by a mode of regulatory focus. Finally, while race was not shown to moderate either sequential mediation model, the influence of race on individual constructs was shown to be moderated by regulatory focus. Results of this study further inform literature on the effects of social learning constructs on drinking behaviors within the first year of matriculating to college. These results also provided further knowledge on what social (i.e., parenting, peer influence) and internal (regulatory focus) components may be important targets in alcohol interventions for college freshmen. --Page ii.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: The present study was undertaken to determine the impact of different parenting styles on college students' adaptation to college. During the second week of college, 80 first-year students from two-parent families completed the Tests of Reactions and Adaptations to College, English version and the Parental Authority Questionnaire. Authoritative parenting was related to more positive characteristics in the students studied than either authoritarian or permissive parenting including having less anxiety, being more willing to seek help from peers and teachers, being better prepared for exams, and giving greater priority to their college studies. While permissive parenting was related to better emotional adjustment than authoritarian parenting, the behavioral and belief differences resulting from those two parenting styles were negligible. Comparing mothers and fathers, the fathers' parenting styles had a greater impact on the students than the mothers' parenting styles. The results of this research suggest that different parenting styles have impacted the development of students' individual dispositions and that those individual dispositions then impact on and are exhibited in the students' initial adjustment to college. Book excerpt: Childhood maltreatment is a major problem internationally, with millions of children affected (Cross & Hershkowitz, 2017), and abuse can lead to many long-term effects throughout the lifespan (Felitti et al., 1998). The current study aimed to better understand the long-term impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) on functioning in first-year college students using data collected from a large, Mid-Atlantic university. Linear regression was used to examine the impact of cumulative ACES scores on college adjustment and alcohol use in the sample. The analyses suggested a significant relationship between ACES score and college adjustment, but a non-significant relationship between ACES and alcohol use. Moderation effects were also analyzed, and gender was found significantly moderate the relationship between ACES and college adjustment in the sample, with males displaying significantly lower college adjustment scores than females. The findings of this study have important implications for professionals in both the grade-school and post-secondary settings, and supports the use of trauma-informed practices with children and youth.

Book excerpt: Helicopter parenting (HP) is an emerging parenting style that has presented new challenges for higher education professionals in their efforts to guide college students in their development, such as moral development and growth. As a result, this dissertation study sought to investigate how such factors as maternal and paternal HP, moral judgment and reasoning (MJR), and drinking motives (DM) and how they relate to alcohol use experiences (AUE) among college students. Using a final sample of 260 college students, this study examined (1) the relationship among HP, MJR, and AUE and if maternal and/or paternal HP moderated the relationship between MJR and AUE; and (2) the relationship among the four DMs, MJR, and AUE and whether any of the four DMs moderated the relationship between MJR and AUE. To address these aims, hierarchical multiple regression (HMR) analyses were performed. Additionally, confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted to verify the factor structure of the HP measure used in this study. Results of the first set of HMR analyses revealed no significant relationship between either type of HP and MJR scores; similar results were found between MJR and AUE. However, these results did reveal a significant, albeit moderately weak, association between both types of HP and AUE. Similarly, the second set of HMR analyses showed that MJR was not significantly related to any of the drinking motives nor to AUE; however, all four drinking motives were significantly related to AUE. CFA analyses revealed that the indices of model fit for the one-factor structure tested generally met the acceptable levels for good model fit for the data. Implications, conclusions, and directions for future research are discussed.
