Research indicates that younger generations are less religious than their parents in many countries, especially in the U.S. (Pew Research Center, 2018b). Even though most American Christians say that faith is vital in their life, educating children in religion is critical because it provides moral guidance and appropriate values (American Enterprise Institute, 2019). However, most Christians find it challenging to perceive and articulate the relationship between faith and daily life even though they attend church regularly (Bunge, 2008). Also, many parent-child spiritual programs organized by churches cannot equip parents to transmit their faith to their children (Bunge, 2008). Therefore, this qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore Mandarin-speaking parents’ perspectives, practices, and beliefs when experiencing a Christian Spiritual Parenting Program (CSPP), particularly examining the outcome of transferring Christian faith from parents to children. This study was guided by the Practical Theology Theory, which focused on integrating Christian theology and taking action to practice spirituality. A semi-structured interview was conducted via Zoom, and six participants answered 10 interview questions. After the data coding and analysis, there were 11 critical themes revealed (Estranged Family Relationships, Self-Control Problems, Lack of Spiritual Application, Do not Know how to Raise Children in the Lord, Consistent Practice, Prayer, Group Supports, Mindset Change, Better Personality, Better Relationships, and More Church Engagement). Consequently, six conclusions yield: (a) parents have to change themselves before changing their children, (b) faith transmission is closely related to family relationships, (c) family time is significant for building positive family relationships, (d) spiritual practice can change parents from their internal to external behavior, (e) Community of Practice is essential for the CSPP’s success, and, (f) the CSPP is whole-person education which is suitable for all parents regardless of their children’s ages. Since this study was focused on Mandarin-speaking parents, people who speak other languages were excluded, which is the limitation of the study. This study recommends that the church or religious decision-makers provide spiritual training programs and offer practice opportunities for parents regarding raising children in the Lord.

We are often reminded that the authors, two longtime friends, are ordinary working mothers. Fortunately, they are also experienced and well-read congregational leaders, and they bring that perspective to their reflections. Hopes and Fears is also about sharing, in the widest and deepest sense of that word. As many parents know, learning to share is one of the most difficult things for many children to acquire. McCleneghan and Moses have decided to teach by example with this book, noting: 'we're hopeful that as we share our lives—the trials and tribulations and incredible joys—other parents will feel inspired to reflect on their own experiences, and perhaps even to consider new ways in which their own faith is relevant to their identities as parents.' Sociologist Christian Smith and his team sought to answer this question by interviewing over two hundred parents from across the U.S. affiliated with religious congregations of various types. The book presents the voices of parents from diverse socioeconomic and religious backgrounds interested in passing on their religious convictions and practices to their children, with the focus on why they think this matters, and how they do it. What Smith and his team found was surprising. Almost all the parents interviewed- whether Catholic, Evangelical, Jewish, Muslim, Mormon, or Hindu, and whether politically or theologically conservative or liberal-view the transmission of religion in much the same way. Most religious parents do not expect professional clergy and youth ministries to play a large role in imparting to young people a taste for continued religious affiliation and participation. Rather, they expect to do this work themselves, viewing their children as ongoing "projects". Moreover, very few of these religious parents regard what we might call the "truth" of religious claims-beliefs in salvation or the trinity (for example), the afterlife, heaven, etc.-as important reasons for the centrality of religion in their lives and the lives of their children. For nearly all, including the most conservative, religion is almost always about community, morality, and a sense of purpose, all of which lead to a better quality of life for themselves and their children in the here and now. Smith and his co-authors ground their discussion of religious parenting in a broader set of theoretical claims about the way in which religious transmission occurs. Drawing on cognitive anthropology and inspired by work in cognitive science, the authors present and describe the background "cultural models" that American religious parents hold and use to inform their parenting"--
