Book excerpt: The current study examined the relationship of parental support, behavioral control, and psychological control among Hispanic adolescents and depression. The sample included 839 Hispanic (primarily Mexican) 9th - 12th graders from west Texas area school districts who were given a self-reported survey to assess parental behaviors and adolescent depression. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), findings indicated that higher levels of maternal support were related to lower levels of depression in adolescent boys. The opposite was also found to be true for girls; higher levels of paternal support were related to lower levels of depression. Surprisingly, maternal support was not significantly related to depression in adolescent females, nor paternal support to depression in adolescent males. Parental behavioral control was found to be significant for both genders in the bivariate correlational analysis but was not found to be significantly related in the SEM multivariate analysis. Maternal psychological control was found to be significantly related to depression in boys and girls, wheras paternal psychological control was only found to be significantly related to depression in boys. Socioeconomic status and age were also asessed with the parenting variables to see how they affected depression in Hispanic adolescents. Age was not significantly related. However, socioeconomic status was found to be significant for girls but not for boys. Girls who came from higher SES backgrounds were less likely to be depressed. Results are discussed along with implications for therapists working with Hispanic populations.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: What can parents, and others interested in adolescents, do to facilitate their healthy development? In many decades of work, researchers have continually identified three central dimensions of parenting: support, behavioral control, and psychological control, all of which have been associated consistently with either positive or negative indicators of adolescent functioning. Notwithstanding its volume, the research has been non specific as to the effects of these dimensions and has otherwise been limited by a predominant concentration on western families. This monograph reported on research that addressed these limitations by testing specific effects of the parenting dimensions and by doing with multiple analytic techniques on data from adolescents in 11 cultures across the world. In al sites, it was found that support was associated with higher adolescent social competence and lower depression; psychological control with higher depression and antisocial behavior; and behavioral control with lower antisocial behavior. Recommendations included considering that these dimensions are the parental contribution to relationship types or socialization conditions that, when achieved, (with parents or other significant person) are responsible for the effects.

Book excerpt: The bidirectional relations between parenting behaviors and youth mental health were examined in a Mexican American adolescent sample using a transactional model. Data were collected at two time points, approximately one year apart. The sample consisted of 216 participants at Time 1 (14-19 years old) and 88 participants at Time 2. Youth reported on internalizing and externalizing symptoms as well as six maternal parenting behaviors. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted with T1 data to test a two-factor structure of parenting behaviors: Supportive Parenting and Harsh Parental Control. Strong evidence was found for higher T1 internalizing symptoms uniquely predicting lower T2 Supportive Parenting when accounting for the variance in T1 Supportive Parenting and externalizing symptoms and T2 Harsh Parental Control. Evidence was also found for higher T1 externalizing symptoms predicting higher T2 Harsh Parental Control when accounting for variance in T1 Harsh Parental Control and internalizing symptoms. Parenting behaviors, however, did not predict youth mental health symptoms as expected. An ecodevelopmental framework including culture, neighborhood context, and developmental stage were used to interpret findings.
