Book Critical New Perspectives on ADHD

Download or read book Critical New Perspectives on ADHD written by Gwynedd Lloyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from all over the world take a critical, highly international and often controversial perspective on the ADHD phenomenon – a condition that has reached global proportions, significantly affecting the lives of children, parents and teachers worldwide. This book raises a number of concerns often not covered by the material currently available to parents and practitioners. Critical New Perspectives on ADHD unpicks the myths surrounding the development of this phenomenon and leaves no stone unturned in its search for answers. An in-depth exploration into the reasons for the emergence and maintenance of ADHD lead to suggested explanations of the dominance of US psychiatric models and the need for new markets for major pharmaceutical companies, as well as the functions that ADHD diagnoses fulfil in families, classrooms and communities. In a world where moves to educational inclusion are paradoxically paralleled by the ever-increasing use of medication to control children’s behaviour, this book scrutinises current accepted practice and offers alternative perspectives and strategies for teachers and other education professionals. This in an invaluable resource for anyone with a serious interest in ADHD and other behavioural difficulties.

Book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD

Download or read book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD written by Anthony W. O. Dillon and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children (Neven, Anderson, & Godber, 2002), and one of the most controversial topics in children's mental health (Wolraich, 1999), where the controversy relates to the questionable validity of ADHD as a medical condition. This study evaluates parental attitudes that canvass a spectrum of beliefs in this respect. The predominant belief within the scientific and research community is that ADHD is a proven neurological condition. However, many researchers (e.g, H. Glasser, 2005; Spillane, 2009; D.B. Stein, 2001b) question its validity as a medical condition, largely on the basis that there is currently no objective diagnostic test to identify a pathology believed to cause ADHD-type behaviours (Diller, 2006; Furman, 2009) and that a genetic basis for ADHD has not been identified (Joseph, 2006). The concern is raised that presenting ADHD as a medical condition is potentially disempowering for parents, and may lead to misdirected treatment for children (Neven, et al. 2002). Parents with children displaying ADHD-type behaviours (i.e., hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattentiveness), typically must decide whether they believe that their child's behaviours are the result of a medical condition called ADHD, or are simply a cluster of behaviours that some adults find problematic. Once having decided, parents are then faced with the related decision of treatment: namely, whether the ADHD-type behaviours should be managed using medication, through a non-medicative approach such as behavioural interventions, or perhaps through a combination of both approaches. The use of medication to control behaviours adds to the controversy surrounding ADHD, especially for children. Another point of controversy in relation to the use of medication is the growing concern regarding safety and side-effects, as well as medication's limited long-term effectiveness in helping children (e.g., Breggin, 2008). Given these concerns, and using a mixed-methods approach, this research comprises three inter-related synergistic studies to explore parents' perceptions and experiences of ADHD, as well as the decision-making process they go through when deciding whether or not to accept the ADHD diagnosis for their child.

This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treating ADHD/ADD in Children and Adolescents: Solutions for Parents and Clinicians was written for parents, clinicians, and teachers to learn a deeper understanding of ADHD and implement specific, clear, and effective ways to successfully evaluate and treat ADHD problems at home and school. Readers will learn not only research-based and traditional approaches for treating ADHD, but also proven newer and alternative methods. This book provides the tools for readers to feel more informed and competent in addressing the many challenges that children and adolescents with ADHD experience. Whether new or previously exposed to ADHD, readers should find the information to be very useful and effective in transforming ADHD. This book is comprehensive in addressing the complete range of challenges that ADHD presents to children, teens, and families, including accurately diagnosing ADHD and identifying the frequent co-existing conditions, better understandings of the condition, powerful parental behavioral management skills for home and school difficulties, ways to improve family and peer challenges, enhancing homework and learning problems, obtaining appropriate school services and addressing classroom issues, better partnerships with physicians for effective ADHD medication treatments, and utilizing a number of additional and alternative approaches to decrease and treat ADHD. The book has three main aims. The first is to provide a deeper understanding of ADHD. Without accurate perspectives, families may not address the difficulties and challenges appropriately, and treatment approaches may not be as successful or can fail. The second goal is to learn the fundamentals about managing and treating the many ADHD challenges at home and school. The third is for readers to learn a number of additional and alternative approaches to help treat ADHD symptoms and challenges. Some of these proven approaches are newer, while others have a history of effectiveness.

Book If Your Adolescent Has ADHD

Download or read book If Your Adolescent Has ADHD written by Thomas J. Power and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents (ages 12-20) with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for academic problems, strained relationships, peer rejection and unsafe behavior -- and parents are often at a loss for how to handle these challenges. If Your Adolescent Has ADHD: An Essential Resource for Parents provides the up-to-date information and down-to-earth support that parents need. It offers an in-depth look at causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and parenting strategies. Contrary to what was once believed, ADHD that starts earlier in childhood usually persists into the teen years. Yet even experienced parents are often caught unawares by the fresh challenges that adolescence brings. This book is one of the few to address ADHD in the context of teen friendships, dating, curfews and sports and extracurricular activities. It also offers practical advice from a leading psychologist on determining readiness to drive and instilling good homework and study habits. This book is a readable, reliable guide to evidence-based treatments for ADHD including behavioral therapy, medications, and educational interventions. Some approaches, such as school-based mentoring, have been little discussed in other parenting books. The authors also offer effective behavioral strategies that can be used at home, including communication and negotiation, problem solving, rewards, strategic punishments and behavioral contracts; and advice for older adolescents on dealing with college, work, and moving away from home.
