Book Parental Perceptions of Oral Health Related Quality of Life for Children that Receive Care on Give Kids a Smile Day

Download or read book Parental Perceptions of Oral Health Related Quality of Life for Children that Receive Care on Give Kids a Smile Day written by Andrew Clayton Gibson and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life for patients treated at Give Kids a Smile. Methods: Participants were asked to complete a 25-question survey regarding their child's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), with answers ranked on a 0 to 4 point scale. Results: A total of 78 questionnaires were completed, with the mean score of 5.19. Conclusions: Give Kids a Smile was created to treat children with unmet oral healthcare needs, therefore it was hypothesized that the OHRQoL for the children treated would be negatively impacted and thus this score high. This was not demonstrated in the current study and these findings could be due to a variety of factors, including relying on the parent to report the child's symptoms as well as low oral health literacy for parents completing the questionnaires.

Book Use of the Child and Parent Perceptions Questionnaires to Assess the Impact of Oral Health on the Quality of Life in American Children Ages 11 14 Years

Download or read book Use of the Child and Parent Perceptions Questionnaires to Assess the Impact of Oral Health on the Quality of Life in American Children Ages 11 14 Years written by Misty D. Lenk and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Quality of life" is a dynamic construct. Broadly defined, it is an individual's satisfaction with the major areas of his/her life. It is associated with multiple variables and subject to change over time. An objective of this investigation was to evaluate if malocclusion and other oro-facial conditions affect oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). A further goal was to evaluate if changes in OHRQ0L occur with orthodontic treatment. A final aim was to evaluate the correlation between child and caregiver reports of OHRQoL. A convenience sample of 11-14-year-old children and their caregivers was recruited: pediatric group (N=64); orthodontic group (N=68); and cleft group (N48). Subjects completed OHRQ0L questionnaires at enrollment, 6-months and 12-months. The effects of group, time, and group X time were investigated using factorial ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer procedure, and the correlation between child and guardian responses was evaluated by comparing 31 questions common to both questionnaires utilizing the Pearson product-moment procedure. Group and time had significant effects on child OHRQ0L scores, and a significant interaction between group and time was found for the child subjects' 'emotional wellbeing' domain. Post hoc tests revealed significant differences in OHRQoL between the cleft groups and the orthodontic and pediatric dental groups across time. They also revealed significant changes in the orthodontic group's OHRQoL at the 12-month time period. Parents perceived oral and orofacial conditions to have significant impacts on child OHRQoL, with the parents of the cleft groups reporting their children to have significantly worse OHRQ0L compared to the reports of the orthodontic and pediatric dental parents. Parents also viewed their children's 'emotional well being' to change with time and the interaction of group and time to significantly impact 'functional limitation.' Post hoc tests revealed parents of the orthodontic group to report significantly more functional limitations at the 6-month time period when compared to baseline. Finally, Pearson product-moment procedure revealed a significant, positive relationship between caregiver and child responses to the OHRQoL questionnaires. Results from the present investigation suggest that the OHRQ0L of children is variable and influenced by oral condition, that OHRQoL improves during the first year of orthodontic care, and that parent perceptions of child OHRQoL is positively correlated with child reports. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled CHANGES IN CHILDREN'S ORAL HEALTH RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE FOLLOWING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT Submitted by ZHANG MAN For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in September 2007 Malocclusion is a common oral disorder and the demand for orthodontic care is increasing among children. There is a dearth of information as to how malocclusion and its treatment impacts on the life quality of children, which has obvious implications in assessing orthodontic treatment need and evaluating outcomes from orthodontic care. This prospective longitudinal study was conducted to identify associations between orthodontic treatment need and child oral health-related quality of life (COHQoL); to determine the level of agreement between parents' and children's perceptions of COHQoL; to determine changes in COHQoL as a result of undergoing fixed orthodontic appliance therapy and to determine changes in COHQoL following orthodontic treatment. Children (aged 11-14) seeking orthodontic treatment were recruited in this study and followed-up over a three year period. Children's parents were also recruited at baseline. Children self-completed the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ) at baseline (pre-treatment status and expectations of treatment), during orthodontic treatment (at one week, one month, three months, six months, twelve months, and eighteen months after insertion of fixed appliance), and 6-months post-treatment. Their parents completed the Parental Perception Questionnaire (PPQ) and Family Impact scale (FIS) prior to treatment. Children's pretreatment occlusal models were assessed by three commonly used occlusal indices: Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) including Aesthetic Components (AC) and Dental Health Components (DHC), Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need (ICON) and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Improvements in occlusion following orthodontic treatment was determined by assessing differences in ICON scores obtained from pre- and post- treatment orthodontic casts. CPQ scores and AC scores were significant correlated (r=0.27, p0.05). FIS scores were significantly correlated with scores of ICON (r= 0.26, pDuring orthodontic treatment significant changes in CPQ scores occurred (pThere was significant reduction in CPQ scores 6-months following orthodontic treatment compared to pre-treatment (p0.05). Perceived improvement in oral health was associated with improvement in COHQoL (reduction in CPQ scores) a

Book excerpt: Introduction: Children and adolescents with cancer may present with oral complications due to its treatment and/or disease that may compromise their quality of life. Objectives:To assess the oral health related quality of life of children and adolescents undergoing treatment for cancer at a pediatric oncology center. Methods: Ten patients undergoing treatment for cancer aged 8 to 14 years old were assessed between May and July 2015. Information collected was: demographic data, medical history, oncologic diagnoses and chief oral complaint. Measures of caries experience (DMFT/deft index) and periodontal disease (Community Periodontal Index) were calculated. Oral health related quality of life was assessed by the Portuguese validated version of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire in two groups of children: 8 to 10 years old and 11 to 14 years old. Results: Most of the patients were undergoing chemotherapy (n=6), three were undergoing chemotherapy associated with head and neck radiotherapy, and one were undergoing head and neck radiotherapy. Xerostomia, dry lips, dysgeusia and orofacial pain were the most oral complaints among patients. The mean dmft was 4.2, DMFT was 0.9 and CPI was 2.7. Regarding quality of life, 50% of subjects aged 8-10 reported experiencing oral symptoms u201cOftenu201d or u201cEveryday/Almost everydayu201d while 67% of subjects aged 11-14 reported experiencing functional limitations u201cOftenu201d or u201cEveryday/Almost everydayu201d. There was a significant difference between childu2019s and parents' perception on functional limitations on 8 to 10 years old group. Conclusions: Oral complications due to cancer therapy may have a negative impact on quality of life of children and adolescents undergoing cancer therapy.

Book Children s Oral Health Quality of Life in a Community Setting

Download or read book Children s Oral Health Quality of Life in a Community Setting written by Kathryn Martinez Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to assess the baseline oral health quality of life of high-risk children and examine differences in oral health quality of life according to the child's treatment needs at an oral screening exam. We hypothesized that a child's oral health related Quality of Life (QOL) would be correlated with dental treatment needs. This study was a cross-sectional design with subjects who were 8-14 year old patients of Virginia Commonwealth University and/or members of the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond. The oral health quality of life was measured using the Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ). It is a multidimensional scale that includes items concerning functional aspects including oral pain and discomfort, but also includes psychological and social aspects. The four domains tested are: oral symptoms, functional limitations, emotional well-being and social well-being. The children were asked to report on these domains as they related to their oral health in the past 3 months. The dental treatment needs of the children were categorized as (0) no future needs, or (1) restorative or orthodontic needs. Those with no future needs were scheduled for a 6 months periodic exam and prophylaxis (cleaning). The children in need of restorative treatment were scheduled for such (restorations, stainless steel crowns, extractions), and those in need of orthodontics were referred for consult to an orthodontist. The final sample population consisted of 107 children, predominately African American (84%). The intra-oral screenings revealed 75% of children required future dental treatment, specifically 84% restorative and 12% orthodontic work and 25% in need of preventative recall (cleaning and exam at 6 months). Overall, children reported high levels of oral health quality of life. When asked about the overall health of their teeth, lips, jaws and mouth, 39 % (n=42) reported excellent or very good, 50% (n=53) reported good, and 9% (n=10) reported fair or poor. When asked how "overall life" was affected by oral health, 72% (n=77) reported very little or not at all, 13% (n=14) reported some, and 15% (n=16) reported a lot or very much. There were no significant correlations between the oral health quality of life domains and the children's dental treatment needs.

Book Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children

Download or read book Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children written by Neha Agrawal and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) instruments have being widely used in oral health studies. However, most OHRQoL measures are designed to assess the adult population, mainly due to the difficulties for developing such measures for children and their validation. The main contribution of this study was to successfully assess psychometric properties and describe the impact of oral health on children's quality of life and its importance for this specific age group. The use of indicators of OHRQoL in children is necessary since they are based on self-perception and oral health impact, which is essential for planning and evaluation of health promotion considering biological and psychosocial aspects. This book is very useful for students in general and for dental and public health professional in particular to seek and provide more regular dental care for children.

Book Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children with Oligodontia

Download or read book Oral Health Related Quality of Life in Children with Oligodontia written by Leila Raziee and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Oligodontia (congenial absence of six or more teeth) affects functional, emotional and social aspects of an individual's life. Few published studies have evaluated oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children with oligodontia. Methods: Thirty-five 8-to-18-year-old patients with oligodontia recruited from The Hospital for Sick Children and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, and their parents, completed the short format of Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ11-14) and Parent Child Perception Questionnaire (P-CPQ), respectively. Results: Children reported significantly higher overall CPQ score than their parents. Correlations between children's and parents' overall CPQ score, oral symptoms and functional limitations, and social well-being were not statistically significant. However, as children's emotional well-being score increased, parents' score also increased. There was no association between child CPQ score and age, gender, number and location of permanent tooth agenesis in this sample. Conclusion: Children with oligodontia had poorer OHRQoL compared to what was perceived by their parents.

Book Oral Health related Quality of Life

Download or read book Oral Health related Quality of Life written by Marita Rohr Inglehart and published by Quintessence Publishing (IL). This book was released on 2002 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Helping patients achieve an optimal quality of life through patient-centered treatment planning should be the ultimate goal of all oral health care providers. However, this issue extends beyond the realm of the individual clinician's office. This text presents quality-of-life research from various fields, including psychology, public health, and general health care; discusses how a patient-centered approach can be applied to basic oral and craniofacial research, clinical dental practice, community dental health issues, and dental education; and addresses how oral health-related quality of life relates to treating and understanding different patient populations, such as children with special needs, medically compromised patients, patients with oral cancer, and patients with chronic facial pain. Also discussed is how factors such as race/ethnicity, gender, and age can affect oral health-related quality-of-life concerns and treatment strategies. Finally, the book offers an outlook on the role that oral health-related quality of life will play in future research and dental education.

Book Investigating the Complex Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Oral Health related Quality of Life

Download or read book Investigating the Complex Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Oral Health related Quality of Life written by Faizan A. Kabani and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental caries is one of the most common chronic disease in children and continues to be a significant global public health concern. Evidence indicates that chronic diseases, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), have destructive impacts on overall quality of life, health outcomes, and health care expenditures. The ACE investigation identified cumulative dose-response relationships between ACEs and development of diverse health and social consequences later in life. Research is scarce on investigating causal pathways to facilitate contextualized public health interventions addressing this seismic threat. Data was utilized from the 2011-2012 National Survey of Children's Health, inclusive of ages 1-17 for dentate status. The dependent variables identified untreated oral health care needs and preventive dental utilization. The key independent variable, ACEs, included exposure to parental death, parental divorce, parental incarceration, mental health illnesses, domestic violence, neighborhood violence, and racial discrimination. Exogenous variables included age, sex, race/ethnicity, number of children in household, socioeconomic status proxies, health insurance status, and presence of special health care needs. Path analysis, a special subcomponent of structural equation modeling was utilized to explore direct, indirect, and mediating causal pathways. The data, when adjusted for complex survey design, proportionately represents children in the United States. The results of the adjusted logistic regressions revealed ACEs demonstrating varying magnitudes of significance across diverse racial and ethnic profiles. Exposures to parental divorce and parental death particularly exhibited critical magnitudes of influence. Adjusted path analyses demonstrated alternative family structures contributing a mediating role between ACEs and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). In keeping with the Pareto Principle, exposure to certain ACEs, namely parental divorce and parental death, potentially introduces more profound social and health-related consequences later in life. Moreover, invocation of Occam's razor, can assist in theorizing that exposure to alternative family structures (i.e. via parental divorce and/or parental death) initiate a concatenated deteriorating domino effect sequela of secondary ACEs. Therefore, contextualized interventions should prioritize psychotherapeutic child, marriage, and family counseling services improving the home, as an enabling environment, to potentially minimize detriments of ACEs on OHRQoL.

Book Oral Health Related Quality of Life Outcomes of Orthodontics in Children

Download or read book Oral Health Related Quality of Life Outcomes of Orthodontics in Children written by Shoroog Agou and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary conceptual models of health emphasize the importance of patient-based outcomes and recognize the complexity involved in their assessment. Various health conditions, personal, social, and environmental factors, are all thought to contribute to individual's quality of life. However, the impact of orthodontic treatment on Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OH-QOL) outcomes in children has not yet been systematically studied. Hence, this research was planned to assess the effect orthodontic treatment has on pediatric OH-QOL outcomes. Further, the important moderational role of children's psychological assets on OH-QOL reports is explored. Following completion of a preliminary study to confirm the psychometric properties of the Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ11-14), the current two-phase study was undertaken. This consisted of a cross-sectional study examining the relationship among Self-Esteem (SE), malocclusion, and OH-QOL, and a longitudinal study examining the influence of orthodontics and children's Psychological Wellbeing (PWB) on OH-QOL reports. This PhD dissertation is presented in the "Publishable Style". The journals which hold the copyrights for the papers published from this thesis have given permission for the reproduction of the text and figures for this dissertation. The preliminary data confirmed that the CPQ11-14 is sensitive to change when used with children receiving orthodontic treatment. Our cross-sectional findings indicated that the impact of malocclusion on OH-QOL is substantial in children with low SE and identified SE as a salient determinant of OH-QOL in children seeking orthodontic treatment. Longitudinal data, on the other hand, detected significant improvement of OH-QOL outcomes after orthodontic treatment. As postulated, these improvements were most evident for the social and emotional domains of OH-QOL. However, covariate analysis emphasized the important role psychological factors play in moderating OH-QOL reports, as children with better PWB were more likely to report better OH-QOL regardless of their orthodontic treatment status. These results substantiate the validity of contemporary models of patient-based outcomes linking biological, personal, social, and environmental factors. Researchers and clinicians are encouraged to adopt this forward thinking approach when dealing with children with oro-facial conditions. Further studies with larger samples and longer follow-ups would be of value to expand on these findings.
