In the 2013-2014 academic year, about 14% of students in the United States missed at least 10% of the school year or more (Jacob & Lovett, 2017). Everyday struggles such as low wages, bullying, housing, mental wellbeing, and opioid addiction impact children's school attendance. This study determined parents' and teachers' understanding and perceptions of school attendance policies and parents' resources to address students' truancy. The study used a mixed-method survey approach in which 50 parents and 33 teachers indicated their knowledge of Pennsylvania's Act 138 truancy law. The parent survey consisted of 19 Likert and open-ended questions, and the teachers' survey included 18 Likert and open-ended questions. The participating parents and teachers were from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and were the parents of children or taught children in grades K-6. Both parents and teachers agreed (69% parents, 91% teachers) that School Districts in Pennsylvania provided appropriate resources for parents to decrease truancy concerns. Teachers were familiar (18%) or somewhat familiar (73%) with Pennsylvania's Act 138 truancy law. Pennsylvania schools must incorporate appropriate parental support programs to help parents improve school attendance and keep their children involved in school and should continue to implement programs for students and parents to address truancy issues. School districts should include parent and community voices when creating policies and support to identify and discuss how they can serve their truant populations.
