However recent research has shown the considerable benefit in having carefully structured systems for parental involvement. This book presents a review of past and current good practice in this field. Details of a wide range of schemes developed in local areas are given in a series of short contributed papers, which are grouped into sub sections of Part 2 according to the type of project. Part 3 is essentially a manual of materials and methods. The emphasis throughout the book is on service delivery to all children although there is of course considerable discussion of remedial reading and children with special needs The book should appeal to a wide audience in education, educational administration and educational psychology.

Traditional parent involvement such as PTA meetings, bake sales and conferences may not support the needs of diverse families. Research supports parental involvement programs that are subject-specific, differentiated and meet the needs of diverse families such as those with single parents, low socioeconomic status and/or English as a second language. Parent involvement should include communication that is two-way and provide an opportunity for parents to contribute as experts of their child (Larrotta & Yamamura, 2011). Contributing research also supports subject-specific parent involvement such as interventions specifically in math or literacy. Research found that shared book-reading interventions implemented by parents at home did have some beneficial effects on children’s language and literacy skills (Sim, Berthelsen, Walker, Nicholson, & Fielding-Barnsley, 2014). School to home reading journals are a viable parental involvement options that is subject-specific, can be adapted for students at all levels and is flexible to meet the needs of diverse families. This project aims to provide school to home reading journals as a model for educators interested in increasing parent involvement in literacy development. Other objectives include increasing parents’ awareness and understanding of their child’s literacy development, increasing parents’ confidence in supporting their child and creating a partnership between teachers and parents that fosters two-way communication.
