From a systemic perspective there are many influences which could be accounting for this association, one key area being the parent-adolescent relationship. Parent-adolescent relationships have independently been associated with educational attainment as well as physical and mental health outcomes. The prospective study, the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort (n = 8,984; 52% white, 26% Black, 21% Hispanic 1% mixed race) was used to estimate the connections between parent-adolescent relationship quality in 1997, mental health in 2000, and physical health in 2009 and overall educational attainment. Results from path models suggested that the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship was a significant positive predictor of educational attainment and health. Findings provide an important perspective to understand how relationships may affect mental health, education and physical health over time. This information will inform researchers, clinicians, educators, and healthcare professionals in prioritizing and further understanding the importance of parent-child relationships, and how these variables influence long-term outcomes into adulthood.

The nature of the parent-child relationship begins with parenting—the practices and strategies that parents engage in as they raise their children. Parenting during childhood sets the stage for parent-adolescent relati- ships. These relationships make a critical difference during the teenage years: we know that when parent-adolescent relationships are healthy and strong, adolescents are more likely to have high aspirations and achievement, and to make healthier choices when it comes to risk-taking. Most of the research in this ?eld has been based in the United States and has been conducted through studies of European American families. Yet a growing body of research suggests important ethnic differences in styles of parenting and the qua- ties characterizing the parent-adolescent relationship. In this area of research, most existing studies have examined ethnic and cultural group differences using widely accepted measures and concepts of parenting. Comparative studies assume that dimensions of parenting such as parental warmth or control have the same meaning across cultures; however, given that conceptualizations of adolescent-parent re- tionships have been developed and tested on samples comprised largely of European Americans, we cannot rule out the possibility that the way we understand parenting has been shaped by the predominantly Western- and U. S. -focused research in this ?eld.

Book excerpt: Many parents fear the time when their beautiful happy children will become unmanageable adolescents continually engaging in risky or destructive behaviour. Unfortunately, this view of adolescents is the focus of the media, even though it relates to just a small proportion of young people. As the large amount of research we report shows, most adolescents are responsible young people who care about their families and crave the support of their parents. It is also true, however, as much research indicates, that the quality of the relationship parents have with their adolescents is crucial to the wellbeing of those young people. We discuss the need for parents to set reasonable limits on their adolescents and to expect appropriate behavior. We also show, on the basis of research, that children who have experienced positive, caring relationships with their parents are more likely than other adolescents to behave responsibly. In other words, behavior in adolescence does not ‘come out of nowhere’ but builds on earlier experiences in the family. Because of the large amount of research reported in this volume, we expect that it will be useful to practitioners from a range of professions that are likely to focus on adolescents: social workers, youth leaders, welfare workers, religious leaders, psychologists and psychiatrists and contribute to a better understanding of young people and their development, and the importance of families to that development.

Building solid healthy relationships at this stage of their lives is of utmost importance to help them cope with the changes and challenges they are experiencing. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the parent-adolescent relationship in the substance dependency field. The focus is on the relationship between parents and their adolescents who have a substance use disorder. Parenting adolescents poses its own set of challenges, making it difficult to build and maintain healthy parent-adolescent relationships. We argue that although adolescent substance use disorder has been extensively researched, the relationship between parents and adolescents with substance use disorder has surprisingly not received the same attention. It is this gap that this chapter seeks to address. With this in mind, the ecological systems theory was employed here to shed light on the importance and significance of developing healthy parent-adolescent relationships. The findings show that the parent-adolescent relationship primarily informs the daily living of both the parents and the adolescents. The parent-adolescent relationship is therefore very important as it represents whole-family functioning.

Drawing on a thorough review of the existing theoretical and empirical literature in this area, as well as interviews with practitioners directly involved with developing or administering relationship education to adolescents, the authors bring together relevant research and theory from a wide range of disciplines that have examined these issues, and suggest future directions for research and intervention. In particular, they note that although research describing romantic relationships in low-income populations is sparse, there are already-existing nationally representative data sets that include data from substantial numbers of well-sampled low-income adolescents. Analyses of these data would have relatively low cost and a potentially high yield for informing policies that target low-income youth.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study is to examine how parental sexual communication, including sexual education taught in the home, and parental-adolescent relationship quality are associated with adolescent risky sexual behaviors and mental health outcomes. The study hypothesizes that (A) higher levels of parental-adolescent relationship quality will be related to a decrease in adolescent risky sexual behaviors, (B) sexual communication between the parental figure and adolescent combined with sexual education taught in the home will act as a moderator on the relationship between parental-adolescent relationship quality and adolescent risky sexual behaviors, (C) adolescents who report higher levels of risky sexual behavior will be more likely to report higher levels of poor mental health outcomes (i.e., higher levels of anxiety and depression), and (D) parental-adolescent relationship quality will act as a moderator on the relationship between risky sexual behaviors and mental health outcomes. A total of N=78 participants completed an online survey that assessed parental-adolescent relationship quality, risky sexual behavior, sexual communication, and mental health outcomes. Parental-adolescent relationship quality was not associated with risky sexual behaviors. Additionally, sexual communication did not moderate this association. Although there was no support for an association between increased risky sexual behaviors and poorer mental health outcomes, parental-adolescent relationship quality did moderate this association. Increased engagement in risky sexual behaviors was associated with poorer mental health outcomes regardless of parental-adolescent relationship quality. Parental-adolescent relationship quality may impact risky sexual behavior and therapeutic interventions to curb these behaviors could focus on overall relationship quality between adolescents and their parents. To help protect adolescents from poorer mental health outcomes, future research should examine the role of risky sexual behaviors on mental health.
