Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copepod Parasites of Fresh-Water Fishes and Their Economic Relations to Mussel Glochidia The specimens and other material were derived from several sources. First, the work of the biological station involves the handling of large numbers of fish, and several of the regular staff, notably Mr. H. W. Clark, Mr. T. Surber, and Dr. A. D. Howard, have saved such parasitic copepods as they found while examining the gills for glochidia. These were generously turned over to the present author, who had also accumulated a large number of Specimens during the surveys of the mussel fauna of various regions of the United States under the auspices of the Bureau of Fisheries. These collections were augmented during the present investigations by a careful examination of all the preserved gills of fish in the possession of the biological station, of the gills of live fish caught by the regular seining crew or brought to the station for glochidial infection, and of a large number of dead fish caught by local fishermen. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of the Free and Semi-Parasitic Copepoda of the British Islands, Vol. 2 Second pair sometimes foot-like, but mostly forming a strong prehensile uncinate hand. First pair of feet mostly (though not always) different from the following pairs and converted into a prehensile apparatus; second, third, and fourth pairs adapted for swimming; fifth pair 2-jointed, foliaceous; different in the two sexes, the basal joint usually dilated and more or less embracing the smaller apical joint. Eyes as in Cyclops. Heart wanting. Copulative organs in the female symmetrical, in the male usually asymmetrical. Ovisac in most cases single, rarely double. This family, according to the arrangement here adopted, contains thirty-three genera and eighty-one species, and is therefore by far the largest of the nine families coming within the range of the present Monograph. The limits of the family are precisely those adopted by Claus and Boeck, except that the group erected by the former author into a separate family under the name Peltidid are here (as also by Boeck) included amongst the Harpacticid . There is, in fact, no important structural difference between the two, the point relied on by Claus as distinctive being the flattened form of the Peltidid, which is of no great importance in itself, and is found in certain species of some genrea (e.g. Thalestris), the normal form of which is cylindrical. Book The River Congo From Its Mouth to Bolobo

Download or read book The River Congo From Its Mouth to Bolobo written by Harry Hamilton Johnston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The River Congo, From Its Mouth to Bolobo: With a General Description of the Natural History and Anthropology of Its Western Basin River. All that is written or drawn within has been directly done from Nature, and the faultiness in it arises more from incompleteness of detail than from incorrect outline. Nearly the entirety of the book has been compiled in the midst of my studying-ground. Many of the chapters here are reproduced exactly as they were jotted down in pencil, either when stopping to rest in some shady spot, or as I glided along the river in a canoe. All the illustrations have been photographed directly from my drawings, twenty-three of them being absolute fac similes reproduced by the Typographic Etching Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Choniostomatidae: A Family of Copepoda, Parasites on Crustacea Malacostraca This work contains an account of forty-three species of Copepoda, all parasitic on mala-costracous Crustacea, and all belonging to the same family. When in 1890 I began my study of this group, there were published descriptions of only three species, and mention had been made of a fourth. Two more have been since described and a seventh named, but not described; so that until now (July 1897) only five species have been really made known. In the present work I increase this number about nine times, and yet, most likely, my discoveries only extend to one fifth or one sixth or perhaps a much smaller part of the species extant. I have been brought to this conclusion by the consideration that no less than thirty-three of my species have been found exclusively on Crustacea in the Zoological Museum of the Copenhagen University. What multitudes of these animals are likely to be discovered, when some day the large foreign museums acquire rich collections of non-decapod Malacostraca, and when this material is submitted to a thorough research! On the whole, my studies of late years have given me the impression that of nearly all the Crustacea living on the bottom of the sea - the Decapods excepted - we only know from about half down to a very small percentage of existing species. Especially to the parasitic forms does this apply, and I think one of the most important results of the present work is to show the wealth of a group, which hitherto has occupied only a very diminutive place. It may be added that, in the course of the last two years, I have found on the material brought home from the sea near Iceland and Greenland by the Ingolf expedition several new forms which cannot be included in the present treatise, but which will be subjected to fixture examination. A chance led me to this study. In dissecting a female of Idothea marina (L.) I discovered in its marsupium an unknown parasite belonging to the Epicaridea, and further researches led to the discovery of a number of specimens of this species and of a form nearly akin to it on Edotia nodulosa (Kr.).
