Book Global Diversity and Ecological Function of Parasites of Euphausiids

Download or read book Global Diversity and Ecological Function of Parasites of Euphausiids written by Jaime Gómez-Gutiérrez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume critically reviews all previously published work of parasites that interact with krill (order Euphausiacea) updating misconceptions and summarizing the diversity of epibionts, ectoparasites, mesoparasites and endoparasites that interact with these crustaceans. As far as we know, there is a lack of books about parasites of marine crustaceans not targeted to fisheries and aquaculture. Thus, this would be the most complete and integrative monograph of parasites of marine zooplankton and micro nektonic organisms worldwide. Krill form immense aggregations and serve as food for multiple planktonic and nektonic predators playing a crucial role in pelagic food web. Besides, several species are also used for human consumption. For these reasons there is a growing concern about the health issues that krill parasites may impose on other species, including us. This book provides a comprehensive review of parasites of a crustacean order that can extrapolate to potential parasites in other crustacean taxa worldwide.

Book Parasites of North American Freshwater Fishes

Download or read book Parasites of North American Freshwater Fishes written by Glenn L. Hoffman and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A remarkable accomplishment.... [This volume] has been and will continue to be a major force advancing freshwater fish parasitology."—Ernest H. Williams Jr., from the ForewordThis thoroughly revised and updated edition of a classic reference work is the definitive guide to the identification of the parasites of freshwater fishes of North America. The book provides information on public health concerns about fish parasites, the methods used to examine fish for parasites, and those parasites found only in very selective organs or tissues. It lists the known species of each genus, along with reference citations that enable readers to find literature pertinent to species identification, life cycles, and in some cases, control. In the heart of the book, each chapter opens with a description of a phylum and its relevant families and genera, followed by a species list for those genera. Drawings illustrate a representative of each genus, and are supplemented by photographic examples. Many new parasites of North American freshwater fishes have been discovered since the publication of the first edition thirty years ago. For this new edition, the author has added new species accounts and revised the taxonomy, expanded descriptions and discussion of the most important fish parasites, provided a glossary to aid nonspecialists, and updated the reference list through 1992. The volume features twice as many illustrations as the first edition, including the addition of 33 color photographs.

Book The Use of Marine Fish Parasites as Biological Tags

Download or read book The Use of Marine Fish Parasites as Biological Tags written by Faizah Mohd. Shaharom and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was carried out on the parasites of commercial fishes of the South China Sea, mainly from the coastal waters of Terengganu. The host fishes examined were Lutjanidae, Serranidae, Nemipteridae, Carangidae, Priacanthidae and Mullidae. The parasites found were the nematodes (Anisakis sp., and Contracaecum sp.), monogeneans (Six Microcotyle sp., Diplectanum sp., Ancyrocephlus sp., Benedenia sp. and Bicotyle sp.), copepod (Caligus sp.), isoped (Aega sp.), and a digenean (Didymozoon sp.). Two of these species, Philometra sp. and Didymozoon sp., are common and easy to locate. Philometra sp. are found coiled in white nodules on the dorsal fin of Nemipterus sp. Didymozoon sp. are found as yellow cysts on the corsal fin and in the branchial cavity of Priacanthus sp. These two parasites are therefore potential biological tags and their usefulness in following the migration and spawning of fish is discussed. [Author's abstract].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many different kinds of animals have adopted a parasitic life style on the skin and gills of marine and freshwater fishes, including protozoans, flatworms, leeches, a range of crustaceans and even some vertebrates (lampreys). There is a parasitic barnacle, described first in the 19th century by Charles Darwin, fish lice that change sex and bivalve molluscs parasitic only when young. This book explores for the first time in one volume, the remarkable biology of these little known and frequently bizarre animals. The following closely interwoven themes are considered for each group of parasites: how they find their hosts, how they attach, feed and reproduce, the damage they inflict and how the host’s immune system retaliates. Based on the British fauna, but extending where appropriate to examples from North America, Australia and elsewhere, the book is essential reading, not just for the professional parasitologist, but also for anyone interested in fishes and in this neglected field of British natural history. With the enquiring naturalist in mind, terms and concepts are explained as they arise, backed up by a glossary, and the text is liberally illustrated. An introductory chapter on fish biology sets the scene and common fish names are used throughout, as well as scientific names.
