Book excerpt: The Interpreted New Testament integrates insights from 20 years of experience translating the New Testament into a minority language. This extended English paraphrase communicates the meaning of the New Testament simply and clearly, and can be especially helpful for new Bible readers. The paraphrase is accompanied by in-line commentary that explains historical and cultural background, highlights Bible themes, and gives alternate interpretations of difficult passages. To further aid new readers of the New Testament, the paraphrase is preceded by a harmony of the Gospels, a brief overview of Old Testament teachings necessary for understanding the gospel message, and is followed by several appendices. One of these discusses in detail what new believers should understand about their salvation and about following Jesus. Ideal for encountering the New Testament for the first time or studying it more deeply, The Interpreted New Testament is a unique resource for understanding God's word better.

Book Platonism and Naturalism

Download or read book Platonism and Naturalism written by Lloyd P. Gerson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his third and concluding volume, Lloyd P. Gerson presents an innovative account of Platonism, the central tradition in the history of philosophy, in conjunction with Naturalism, the "anti-Platonism" in antiquity and contemporary philosophy. Gerson contends that Platonism identifies philosophy with a distinct subject matter, namely, the intelligible world and seeks to show that the Naturalist rejection of Platonism entails the elimination of a distinct subject matter for philosophy. Thus, the possibility of philosophy depends on the truth of Platonism. From Aristotle to Plotinus to Proclus, Gerson clearly links the construction of the Platonic system well beyond simply Plato's dialogues, providing strong evidence of the vast impact of Platonism on philosophy throughout history. Platonism and Naturalism concludes that attempts to seek a rapprochement between Platonism and Naturalism are unstable and likely indefensible.

Book From the Maccabees to the Mishnah

Download or read book From the Maccabees to the Mishnah written by Shaye J. D. Cohen and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of Shaye J. D. Cohen's important and seminal work on the history and development of Judaism between 164 BCE to 300 CE. Cohen's synthesis of religion, literature, and history offers deep insight into the nature of Judaism at this key period, including the relationship between Jews and Gentiles, the function of Jewish religion in the larger community, and the development of normative Judaism and other Jewish sects. Cohen offers students more than just history, but an understanding of the social and cultural context of Judaism as it developed into the formative period of rabbinic Judaism. This new edition includes a brand-new chapter on the parting of ways between Jews and Christians in the second century CE. From the Maccabees to the Mishnah remains the clearest introduction to the era that shaped Judaism and provided the context for early Christianity.
