In 1963, she was elected to Parliament, and appointed a Minister of State, thus becoming the first female cabinet minister in West Africa. This slim biography is intended as a testament to her life and achievements, and as an encouragement to young African women and girls to identify with positive female role models. It is the first in a series of biographies on eminent Sierra Leonean women of the twentieth century. The author is an educationalist and writer. She has been president of the Sierra Leone Association of Writers and Illustrators, the Sierra Leone Library Board, and sits on the boards of several NGOs.

Presbytarian Hospital School of Nursing, Columbia University, New York - BS Nursing (1965) Otterbein College Westerville, Ohio - BS Zoology (1963)Annie Walsh Memorial School, Freetown, Sierra Leone. 1957) She worked as a staff nurse in the Presbytarian Hospital, Visiting Nurse Service of New York, Family Care Group Practice, in St Luke's hospital, and Substance Abuse Consultant, at the Medical College of Virginia. In 1999, with the help of two cousins, she founded the Caulker Descendants Association, US. Annual reunions are now held where members meet new aunts, uncles, and cousins, learn about family history, try to learn the tribal language (Sherbro) and just have fun as a family. Since her retirement in 2003, she has gone home to Sierra Leone annually to oversee the work of her Community Development Organization - Lesana, which is working on development and rehabilitation of her father's birth place, Mambo Town, Mambo Section, Kagboro Chiefdom, Moyamba District. She lives in Richmond Virginia, with her husband Clive Burnett.

Ferme’s three decades of ethnographic engagements to examine the physical and psychological aftereffects of the harms of Sierra Leone's civil war. Ferme analyzes the relationship between violence, trauma, and the political imagination, focusing on “war times”—the different qualities of temporality arising from war. She considers the persistence of precolonial and colonial figures of sovereignty re-elaborated in the context of war, and the circulation of rumors and neologisms that freeze in time collective anxieties linked to particular phases of the conflict (or “chronotopes”). Beyond the expected traumas of war, Ferme explores the breaks in the intergenerational transmission of farming and hunting techniques, and the lethal effects of remembering experienced traumas and forgetting local knowledge. In the context of massive population displacements and humanitarian interventions, this ethnography traces strategies of survival and material dwelling, and the juridical creation of new figures of victimhood, where colonial and postcolonial legacies are reinscribed in neoliberal projects of decentralization and individuation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sierra Leone experienced 11 years’ civil war after the incursion of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) from adjacent Liberia. The war of Sierra Leone is one of the most researched in Africa. However, the foci of studies are mostly on the RUF. Other armed groups are not sufficiently studied. This book focuses on the governmental side of the Kamajor and the Civil Defence Force (CDF). Kamajors were community-based vigilantes mobilised by paramount chiefs in various Mende communities. During the course of the war, the government organised Kamajors into a pro-governmental militia, the CDF. This book examines how human networks worked in the course of the formation of Kamajor and of the CDF. Even though the roles of human networks have been discussed in the realm of African politics, they have been left hypothetical. Few studies demonstrate the whole picture on how neopatrimonialism, patron–client relations or informal networks function within an organisation. This book describes the course of Kamajor/CDF along with functions of the human networks. In the networks, the threads of human relations are interwoven by subsuming the local, the international and the global dimensions of the armed conflict. Some connect to governmental figures. Others have transnational networks in adjacent Liberia. In the changing situations of the war, some of the relations are maintained, while some relations are disintegrated. Those who emerge as prominent figures in the Kamajor/CDF use their own human networks to obtain resources for the Kamajor/CDF, which in turn, afford themselves higher positions in the force.

Until the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, for several years public health authorities and influential voices in the international public health community have warned of a pandemic and therefore a need to strengthen governments and communities’ ability to prevent and respond to it effectively to minimize its impact on lives and economies. While investments have focused on clinical, diagnostic, and vaccine research, preventing and minimizing the impact of disease outbreaks requires a wider socio-ecological systems approach that places communities at the centre of the response. Such an approach is still rare in public health practice. One of the key lessons that the authors have learned, and on which they reflect in the chapters, is that technical inputs will be as effective as they are fully integrated within the broader architecture of disease outbreak preparedness and response. The ten chapters of this contributed volume are organized under three parts: a conceptual framework, case studies, and recommendations. Communication and Community Engagement in Disease Outbreaks is a timely and essential resource for public health managers, donors, implementers, organizations engaged in disease prevention and control and academics called on to support the response. These audiences should benefit from this approach as the book highlights dimensions that are often under-resourced.
