Book Parametric X Radiation from a Beryllium Crystal

Download or read book Parametric X Radiation from a Beryllium Crystal written by David J. Hauth and published by . This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A source of monochromatic x-rays in the 16 keV to 24 keV range will provide improved contrast and overall image quality in mammography while also reducing overall patient dose Ref 6,7. Based on theoretical work by Freudenberg Ref 6,9, beryllium (Be) was identified as a candidate to be a more efficient source of PXR based x-radiation in this energy range. This thesis describes the use of the NPS 100 MeV linear accelerator (LINAC) to conduct the first parametric x-radiation (PXR) experiments using a beryllium (Be) crystal. Energy spectra were collected from the beryllium crystal that differed from theoretical prediction. This thesis explores explanations of the spectra and provides a foundation of understanding of beryllium crystals for future experiments.

Book Parametric X Ray Radiation in Crystals

Download or read book Parametric X Ray Radiation in Crystals written by Vladimir G. Baryshevsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This systematic and comprehensive monograph is devoted to parametric X-ray radiation (PXR). This radiation is generated by the motion of electrons inside a crystal, whereby the emitted photons are diffracted by the crystal and the radiation intensity critically depends on the parameters of the crystal structure. Nowadays PXR is the subject of numerous theoretical and experimental studies throughout the world. The first part of the book is a theoretical treatment of PXR, which includes a new approach to describe the radiation process in crystals. The second part is a survey of PXR experimental results and the possible applications of PXR as a tool for crystal structure analysis and a source of tunable X-ray radiation.

Book High Order Parametric X Radiation from Silicon and Lithium Fluoride Crystal Monochromators

Download or read book High Order Parametric X Radiation from Silicon and Lithium Fluoride Crystal Monochromators written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis examines parametric x-radiation (PXR) generated by Silicon and Lithium Fluoride monochromators, including the first observation of PXR from Lithium Fluoride. Parametric x-radiation may be described as the Bragg scattering of virtual photons associated with relativistic electrons as they pass through single crystal monochromators. As the photons interact with the crystal lattice they produce x-rays which meet the Bragg condition lambda = 2dsintheta sub B, where theta sub B is the angle between the electron beam and the crystal plane. PXR data were collected from Silicon and Lithium Fluoride crystals using a SiLi detector. The locations of the energy peaks are compared to the locations predicted by theory and the intensity ratios between the peaks are also compared to the theoretical ratios. The PXR energy observed was as predicted by theory for Silicon and Lithium Fluoride monochromators. The observed peak intensity ratios for Silicon were not in agreement with intensity ratios predicted by theory. Intensity ratios observed from Lithium Fluoride were in agreement with the predicted value. jg p2.

Book The Nature of X Rays and Their Interactions with Matter

Download or read book The Nature of X Rays and Their Interactions with Matter written by Joachim Stöhr and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 933 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of modern x-ray science, based on the use of synchrotron radiation and x-ray-free electron lasers (XFELs). It emphasizes the new capabilities of XFELs which extend the study of matter to the intrinsic timescales associated with the motion of atoms and chemical transformations and give birth to the new field of non-linear x-ray science. Starting with the historical understanding of the puzzling nature of light, it covers the modern description of the creation, properties, and detection of x-rays within quantum optics. It then presents the formulation of the interactions of x-rays with atomic matter, both, from semi-classical and first-principles quantum points of view. The fundamental x-ray processes and techniques, absorption, emission, Thomson, and resonant scattering (REXS and RIXS) are reviewed with emphasis on simple intuitive pictures that are illustrated by experimental results. Concepts of x-ray imaging and diffractive imaging of atomic and nano structures are discussed, and the quantum optics formulation of diffraction is presented that reveals the remarkable quantum substructure of light. The unique power of x-rays in providing atom and chemical-bond specific information and separating charge and spin phenomena through x-ray polarization (dichroism) effects are highlighted. The book concludes with the discussion of many-photon or non-linear x-ray phenomena encountered with XFELs, such as stimulated emission and x-ray transparency.

Book Nonlinear Optics Quantum Optics and Ultrafast Phenomena with X Rays

Download or read book Nonlinear Optics Quantum Optics and Ultrafast Phenomena with X Rays written by Bernhard Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Optics, Quantum Optics, and Ultrafast Phenomena with X-Rays is an introduction to cutting-edge science that is beginning to emerge on state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation facilities and will come to flourish with the x-ray free-electron lasers currently being planned. It is intended for the use by scientists at synchrotron radiation facilities working with the combination of x-rays and lasers and those preparing for the science at x-ray free-electron lasers. In the past decade synchrotron radiation sources have experienced a tremendous increase in their brilliance and other figures of merit. This progress, driven strongly by the scientific applications, is still going on and may actually be accelerating with the advent of x-ray free-electron lasers. As a result, a confluence of x-ray and laser physics is taking place, due to the increasing importance of laser concepts, such as coherence and nonlinear optics to the x-ray community and the importance of x-ray optics to the laser-generation of ultrashort pulses of x-rays.

Book Parametric X Radiation from Mosaic Graphite

Download or read book Parametric X Radiation from Mosaic Graphite written by James Edward Barrows and published by . This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the effects of mosaic graphite on the yield of parametric x-radiation (PXR). PXR is the Bragg scattering of virtual photons associated with the Coulombic field of relativistically charged particles interacting with the atomic planes of a crystal. PXR was measured from three samples of mosaic graphite crystals with differing mosaicities. The number of photons per electron was calibrated with the fluorescent x-ray yield from a thin silver foil backing on each of the mosaic crystals. The detector angular field of view was narrowed from previous experiments. Improvements were made in the re-analysis of previous experiments by considering the thick target effects of the x-ray absorption. Previous experiments had erroneously assumed that the calibration fluorescent targets were thin. Re-analysis of previous data using corrections for solid angle, crystal absorption factors and effective thickness resulted in yields similar to those obtained in this work.

Book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity

Download or read book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a joint effort of the Research Materials Information Center (RMIC) of the Solid State Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Libraries and Information Systems Center at Bell Telephone Laboratories (BTL) Murray Hill, N. J. The Research Materials Information Center has, since 1963, been answering inquiries on the avail ability, preparation, and properties of inorganic solid-state research materials. The preparation of bibliographies has been essential to this function, and the interest in ferroelectrics led to the compila tion of the journal and report literature on that subject. The 1962 book Ferroelectric Crystals, by Jona and Shirane, was taken as a cutoff point, and all papers through mid-1969 received by the Center have been included. The Libraries and Information Systems Center of BTL has, over a period of years, developed a proprie tary package of computer programs called BELDEX, which formats and generates indexes to biblio graphic material. This group therefore undertook to process RMIC's ferroelectric references by BELDEX so that both laboratories could have the benefit of an indexed basic bibliography in this important research area.
