Book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization

Download or read book Large Scale PDE Constrained Optimization written by Lorenz T. Biegler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal design, optimal control, and parameter estimation of systems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) give rise to a class of problems known as PDE-constrained optimization. The size and complexity of the discretized PDEs often pose significant challenges for contemporary optimization methods. With the maturing of technology for PDE simulation, interest has now increased in PDE-based optimization. The chapters in this volume collectively assess the state of the art in PDE-constrained optimization, identify challenges to optimization presented by modern highly parallel PDE simulation codes, and discuss promising algorithmic and software approaches for addressing them. These contributions represent current research of two strong scientific computing communities, in optimization and PDE simulation. This volume merges perspectives in these two different areas and identifies interesting open questions for further research.

Book Parametric Sensitivities for Optimal Control Problems Using Automatic Differentiation

Download or read book Parametric Sensitivities for Optimal Control Problems Using Automatic Differentiation written by Roland Griesse and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article presents a new area of application for Automatic Differentiation (AD): Computing parametric sensitivities for optimisation problems. For an optimisation problem containing parameters which are not among the optimisation variables, the term parametric sensitivity refers to the derivative of an optimal solution with respect to the parameters. We treat non-linear finite- and infinite-dimensional optimisation problems, in particular optimal control problems involving ordinary differential equations with control and state constraints, and compute their parametric sensitivities using AD. Particular attention is given to the generation of second-order derivatives required in the process.

Book Control and Optimization with PDE Constraints

Download or read book Control and Optimization with PDE Constraints written by Kristian Bredies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many mathematical models of physical, biological and social systems involve partial differential equations (PDEs). The desire to understand and influence these systems naturally leads to considering problems of control and optimization. This book presents important topics in the areas of control of PDEs and of PDE-constrained optimization, covering the full spectrum from analysis to numerical realization and applications. Leading scientists address current topics such as non-smooth optimization, Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellmann equations, issues in optimization and control of stochastic partial differential equations, reduced-order models and domain decomposition, discretization error estimates for optimal control problems, and control of quantum-dynamical systems. These contributions originate from the “International Workshop on Control and Optimization of PDEs” in Mariatrost in October 2011. This book is an excellent resource for students and researchers in control or optimization of differential equations. Readers interested in theory or in numerical algorithms will find this book equally useful.

Book Optimal Control of Nonsmooth Distributed Parameter Systems

Download or read book Optimal Control of Nonsmooth Distributed Parameter Systems written by Dan Tiba and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the study of distributed control problems governed by various nonsmooth state systems. The main questions investigated include: existence of optimal pairs, first order optimality conditions, state-constrained systems, approximation and discretization, bang-bang and regularity properties for optimal control. In order to give the reader a better overview of the domain, several sections deal with topics that do not enter directly into the announced subject: boundary control, delay differential equations. In a subject still actively developing, the methods can be more important than the results and these include: adapted penalization techniques, the singular control systems approach, the variational inequality method, the Ekeland variational principle. Some prerequisites relating to convex analysis, nonlinear operators and partial differential equations are collected in the first chapter or are supplied appropriately in the text. The monograph is intended for graduate students and for researchers interested in this area of mathematics.

Book Real time PDE constrained Optimization

Download or read book Real time PDE constrained Optimization written by Lorenz T. Biegler and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many engineering and scientific problems in design, control, and parameter estimation can be formulated as optimization problems that are governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). The complexities of the PDEs--and the requirement for rapid solution--pose significant difficulties. A particularly challenging class of PDE-constrained optimization problems is characterized by the need for real-time solution, i.e., in time scales that are sufficiently rapid to support simulation-based decision making. Real-Time PDE-Constrained Optimization, the first book devoted to real-time optimization for systems governed by PDEs, focuses on new formulations, methods, and algorithms needed to facilitate real-time, PDE-constrained optimization. In addition to presenting state-of-the-art algorithms and formulations, the text illustrates these algorithms with a diverse set of applications that includes problems in the areas of aerodynamics, biology, fluid dynamics, medicine, chemical processes, homeland security, and structural dynamics. Audience: readers who have expertise in simulation and are interested in incorporating optimization into their simulations, who have expertise in numerical optimization and are interested in adapting optimization methods to the class of infinite-dimensional simulation problems, or who have worked in "offline" optimization contexts and are interested in moving to "online" optimization.

Book Sensitivity Analysis for the Optimal Design and Control of Advanced Guidance Systems

Download or read book Sensitivity Analysis for the Optimal Design and Control of Advanced Guidance Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of the research project is to use Continuous Sensitivity Equation Methods in order to design actuators and sensors for distributed parameter systems. Investigations for parameterized sensor/actuator placement indicate that computational challenges exist for certain types mathematical models. When the governing equations are partial differential equations and the sensitivity analysis is with respect to parameters that determine placement of sensors and/or actuators, there can be a loss of regularity between the model equations and that of the corresponding sensitivity equations. This issue is particularly important for accuracy and convergence of numerical sensitivity calculations that may be used within a control design framework.

Book Modelling and Control in Solid Mechanics

Download or read book Modelling and Control in Solid Mechanics written by A.M. Khludnev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-01-21 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the boundary value problems for a wide range of mathematical models of the mechanics of deformable bodies, in particular, the boundary value problems concerning plates and shells, crack theory, and elastoplastic bodies. An essential feature of the discussed boundary value problems is the availability of the inequality type constraints imposed on solutions such as the impenetration condition for contact problems, the yield plasticity condition, etc. As a consequence, the presence of free boundaries is typical of the boundary value problems concerned. The objective of the book is to display some new methods of analyzing such problems, as well as to perform research on new models evolved from engineering practice. Readers will find a variety of new mathematical models describing some contact problems for plates and shells, an equilibrium of plates involving cracks, etc. Furthermore, some new mathematical methods are presented which were specially developed by the authors to study the problems concerned. These help to convey a comprehensive picture of the present state of mathematical problems on the free-boundary elasticity and plasticity theory. The book is intended for postgraduates, scientists and engineers.and for Students interested in problems of modelling and optimal control in the mechanics of deformable bodies.
