Book Parametric Design of Interplanetary and Orbital Trajectories with Examples for Mars 1973 1975 and 1977 Opportunities

Download or read book Parametric Design of Interplanetary and Orbital Trajectories with Examples for Mars 1973 1975 and 1977 Opportunities written by John F. Newcomb and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for parametrically studying the general interplanetary trajectory design problem is discussed; the method couples the design of interplanetary trajectories with the resulting planetary orbits obtainable from various launch and arrival opportunities. The procedure is applied to the trajectories which could be launched to Mars in the years 1973, 1975, and 1977, and for those opportunities, a set of parametric charts for use in designing Mars missions is included. The important mission parameters are presented and discussed, and launch windows are established which maximize payload in planetary orbit for a coplanar periapsis deboost.

Book Multiple Gravity Assist Interplanetary Trajectories

Download or read book Multiple Gravity Assist Interplanetary Trajectories written by A V Labunsky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting the results of twenty years; experience in the field of multipurpose flights, this monograph includes the complex routes of the trajectories of a number of bodies (e.g., space vehicles, comets) in the solar system. A general methodological approach to the research of flight schemes and the choice of optimal performances is developed. Additionally, a number of interconnected methods and algorithms used at sequential stages of such development are introduced, which allow the selection of a rational multipurpose route for a space vehicle, the design of multipurpose orbits, the determination of optimal space vehicle design, and ballistic performances for carrying out the routes chosen. Other topics include the practical results obtained from using these methods, navigation problems, near-to-planet orbits, and an overview of proven and new flight schemes.

Book Fast Interplanetary Missions with Low thrust Propulsion Systems

Download or read book Fast Interplanetary Missions with Low thrust Propulsion Systems written by W. E. Moeckel and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple family of indirect-transfer trajectories between circular orbits is used to evaluate the mass ratio required to complete round-trip interplanetary missions using low-thrust propulsion systems. These trajectories, although not optimum, yielded very substantial reductions in total round-trip time for Mars missions with moderate increases in initial weight. For a powerplant specific weight [alpha] of 10 pounds per kilowatt of jet power, trip times were reduced from 1200 to 600 days, for a typical manned mission, with an initial weight increase of a factor of two. Comparison with a nuclear rocket with 1000-second specific impulse indicated that the electric-propulsion system required less initial weight for trip times as low as 550 days with [alpha]=10 and as low at 400 days with [alpha]=5 pounds per kilowatt. Further weight reductions would be expected with more nearly optimum trajectories.

Book Interplanetary Astrodynamics

Download or read book Interplanetary Astrodynamics written by David B. Spencer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the orbital mechanics tools and techniques necessary to design, predict, and guide a trajectory of a spacecraft traveling between two or more bodies in a Solar System, this book covers the dynamical theory necessary for describing the motion of bodies in space, examines the N-body problem, and shows applications using this theory for designing interplanetary missions. While most orbital mechanics books focus primarily on Earth-orbiting spacecraft, with a brief discussion of interplanetary missions, this book reverses the focus and emphasizes the interplanetary aspects of space missions. Written for instructors, graduate students, and advanced undergraduate students in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, this book provides advanced details of interplanetary trajectory design, navigation, and targeting.

Book The Effect of Interplanetary Trajectory Options on a Manned Mars Aerobrake Configuration

Download or read book The Effect of Interplanetary Trajectory Options on a Manned Mars Aerobrake Configuration written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manned Mars missions originating in low Earth orbit (LEO) in the time frame 2010 to 2025 were analyzed to identify preferred mission opportunities and their associated vehicle and trajectory characteristics. Interplanetary and Mars atmospheric trajectory options were examined under the constraints of an initial manned exploration scenario. Two chemically propelled vehicle options were considered: (1) an all propulsive configuration, and (2) a configuration which employs aerobraking at Earth and Mars with low lift/drag (L/D) shapes. Both the interplanetary trajectory options as well as the Mars atmospheric passage are addressed to provide a coupled trajectory simulation. Direct and Venus swingby interplanetary transfers with a 60 day Mars stopover are considered. The range and variation in both Earth and Mars entry velocity are also defined. Two promising mission strategies emerged from the study: (1) a 1.0 to 2.0 year Venus swingby mission, and (2) a 2.0 to 2.5 year direct mission. Through careful trajectory selection, 11 mission opportunities are identified in which the Mars entry velocity is between 6 and 10 km/sec and Earth entry velocity ranges from 11.5 to 12.5 km/sec. Simulation of the Earth return aerobraking maneuver is not performed. It is shown that a low L/D configuration is not feasible for Mars aerobraking without substantial improvements in the interplanetary navigation system. However, even with an advanced navigation system, entry corridor and aerothermal requirements restrict the number of potential mission opportunities. It is also shown that for a large blunt Mars aerobrake configuration, the effects of radiative heating can be significant at entry velocities as low as 6.2 km/sec and will grow to dominate the aerothermal environment at entry velocities above 8.5 km/sec. Despite the additional system complexity associated with an aerobraking vehicle, the use of aerobraking was shown to significantly lower the required initial LEO weight. In compari...
