The plant is divided into the four subsystems: a turbine system, compressor system, motor/generator, and an underground air storage reservoir. The turbine system comprises a high-pressure turbine, a low-pressure turbine, two combustors, and a recuperator. The compressor system comprises a low-pressure compressor, high-pressure compressor, booster compressor, intercoolers, and an aftercooler. A water-compensated mined cavern constitutes the underground air-storage reservoir. Plant performance is presented in terms of five parameters: specific air flow rate, specific heat rate, specific storage volume, specific compression rate, and overall plant efficiency. The capital and operating costs of the plant as a function of the turbomachinery options are presented. Design variables of the turbomachinery are the reservoir pressure and inlet gas temperatures to the turbines.

The turbine system comprises a high-pressure gas turbine, a low-pressure gas turbine, two combustors, and a recuperator. The compressor system consists of a low-pressure compressor, a booster compressor, an intercooler, and an aftercooler. A water-compensated mined cavern is the underground reservoir. Thermodynamic analyses of subsystem components are made, and plant performance is evaluated. The results are given in terms of the five parameters: specific air flow rate, specific storage volume, specific heat rate, specific compression rate, and overall plant efficiency. The effects on plant performance of design parameters such as inlet gas temperature and pressure to each turbine were analyzed. Also considered is the effect of using cooling air for turbine blades and vanes.
