Book excerpt: Derek and Margo Ackerman were an ordinary working couple with grown children, looking forward to retirement in the next five years. Derek, age sixty, is a human-relations consultant for a high-end furnishings manufacturer in Omaha, NE. Margo is the executive secretary for the owner of Aksarben Publishing. By chance, something theyve come to regard as nonexistent, they cross paths with Tomas Talbert who is from a parallel universe. After they saved his life, they took him home with them, Tomas recruits Derek and Margo to join him in creating a team whose purpose is to save not only this world but also his own parallel world. As on Earth, so in Parallel becomes the theme for the rescue missions on which they embark. After a visit to Parallel, which is many hundreds of years advanced scientifically over Earth, they return to their own world rejuvenated and ready for the missions on which they will be sent. In Parallel, they were voluntarily implanted with language chips, allowing them to read, write, and speak numerous languages fluently. With Tomas and his wife, Judith, they make use of an advanced cigar-shaped ship, and Bart, a centuries-advanced computer able to manage rapid transit using wormholes, the space-warp technologies, and the capabilities of the ship. In addition, the team was outfitted with inner and outer suits that cover their entire bodies including multipurpose face masks. All equipment with which they were supplied is in existence or on the drawing boards of scientists in this world. With Barts help, the team turns a simple European vacation into a working one as the team is enlarged and the missions become more dangerous and complex.

Derek and Margo did, and the stranger, Tomas, recruited them to join him and his wife Judith in creating a Team whose purpose is to save this world and their Parallel world. "As on Earth, so in Parallel" proves to be the guiding principle for the rescue missions on which they embark. After a visit to Parallel, which is many hundreds of years advanced scientifically over Earth, they return to this world, rejuvenated and ready for the Missions on which they will be sent. With Tomas and Judith, they use scientifically advanced equipment, a computer named Bart, and a cigar-shaped Ship, capable of managing rapid transit utilizing wormholes and space-warp technologies. All equipment with which the parallel world supplies them is in existence or on the drawing boards of scientists in this world. With Bart's help, the Team turns a simple European vacation into a working one as the Missions become more dangerous and complex. Their message on every Mission is spelled out in the appropriate language on their insignia: "VIOLENCE BEGETS VIOLENCE - PEACE BEGETS PEACE."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Werewolf. Baker. Protector of the weak. Ember's large werewolf family has always kept her safe and focused on what really matters --- feeding loved ones their favorite desserts. But when a missing half-brother draws the twenty-something away from home for the very first time, bonds to her pack are tested at every turn. The milk-chocolate eyes of an off-limits human are the first threat to her pack commitment. Mix in arrogant alphas plus unexpected betrayals and the final product isn't particularly sweet. Will Ember be able to bake her way to safety before her family collapses like a tray of over-beaten cupcakes all around her? Or will she change so much in the process that she's never able to go home again? This box set includes four novels, two short stories, and one scrumptious recipe. Don't miss the "emotional and psychological roller coaster" of this complete urban fantasy series.

Book Communicating Climate Change

Download or read book Communicating Climate Change written by Susanna Priest and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks and answers the question of what communication research and other social sciences can offer that will help the global community to address climate change by identifying the conditions that can persuade audiences and encourage collective action on climate. While scientists often expect that teaching people the scientific facts will change their minds about climate change, closer analysis suggests this is not always the case. Communication scholars are pursuing other ideas based on what we know about influence and persuasion, but this approach does not provide complete answers either. Some misconceptions can be corrected by education, and some messages will be more powerful than others. The advent of the Internet also makes vast stores of information readily available. But audiences still process this information through different filters, based on their own values and beliefs – including their understanding of how science works. In between momentous events, media coverage of climate tends to recede and individuals turn their attention back to their daily lives. Yet there is a path forward: Climate change is a social justice issue that no individual – and no nation – can solve on their own. A different sort of communication effort can help.

Book Steps to Facilitate Principal Investigator Led Earth Science Missions

Download or read book Steps to Facilitate Principal Investigator Led Earth Science Missions written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-05-21 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principal-investigator (PI) Earth science missions are small, focused science projects involving relatively small spacecraft. The selected PI is responsible for the scientific and programmatic success of the entire project. A particular objective of PI-led missions has been to help develop university-based research capacity. Such missions, however, pose significant challenges that are beyond the capabilities of most universities to manage. To help NASA's Office of Earth Science determine how best to address these, the NRC carried out an assessment of key issues relevant to the success of university-based PI-led Earth observation missions. This report presents the result of that study. In particular, the report provides an analysis of opportunities to enhance such missions and recommendations about whether and, if so, how they should be used to build university-based research capabilities.
